854301 2010-02-02 01:01:00 Sounds good Joe, fingers crossed .

I've been gone all day and will leave for a couple of days but one last shot here----

I got back home after letting things run and while I was gone Synaptec reported that now :

2 packages will be held back and not upgraded
310 new packages will be installed
874 packages will be upgraded
48 packages will be removed

688 MB of extra space will be used
868 MB have to be downloaded

I'll click on Apply and see what happens next .

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm . . . I get a flash that is too fast to read and a double thermometer that is going back and forth like a Cylon eyeball and then it goes away - and I am right back at Synaptec with that long list again asking me to Reload - Mark All Upgrades - Apply

And there's an occasional yellow highlighted package and a few green ones . Opps - spoke too soon as there's a red one or so too . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Now what?

Yellows =

a2ps
acpid
alsaconf
alsa-utils
amarok
amarok-engine-xine
amarok-scripts
anacron
apmd
apt
apt-common
arts
ash
aspell
aspell-en
atk1 . 0-common
at-spi
avahi

Greens =

acl
alsa-plugins-doc

Reds =

alsa-plugins

Too many to type - let's just say there are lots more that I didn't enter .

Is this going well or not?

Do I have to re-boot for these to work?

854302 2010-02-02 01:17:00 Doesn't sound right,
You might need to choose a different repository in synaptic.
At the top of the window click on Settings.
then select Repositories.
I use the one that contains ://ftp.nl.freebsd.org/os/......etc
try unticking the others.
click Apply
then back at the main Synaptic window
click Reload.
then try the update again
The Cylon eyeball should stick around for a while.

Hope this helps.

854303 2010-02-02 01:30:00 Uh huh - it's different this time.

Will report back

854304 2010-02-02 01:42:00 The following problems were found on your system

E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages
E:Cannot read vendors.list file

Here comes that Chinese Trigonometric stuff again! :yuck:
SurferJoe46 (51)
854305 2010-02-02 01:46:00 Could not download all repository indexes

The repository - etc, etc . . . . . let's just say it failed somehow .

There is no option for any NZ repository that I can find .

Is it OK that I check on a PCLinuxOS vendor too?

854306 2010-02-02 01:48:00 Now - after choosing a new repository - I get this warning------

Essential packages will be removed.
This may render your system unstable!

Do I OK or Cancel that?
SurferJoe46 (51)
854307 2010-02-02 01:57:00 you are jumping ahead too fast for me to research what you are doing!!
I would cancel that one and not select any vendors
back to the error!

OK so after a quick read of a couple of things on the web sites
it would appear that error is connected to KDE4
Which you won't need, try deselecting it in the main synaptic window after it marks all upgrades. you do this by right clicking on the entry and selecting unmark.
Deselect all Kde4 packages and try again.
KarameaDave (15222)
854308 2010-02-02 02:26:00 Do I have to de-select them individually? There are over 400 Kde4 packages!

AND - when I tried to de-select Kde4-macros - the commands are grayed-out - all except to Mark for installation or Properties.
SurferJoe46 (51)
854309 2010-02-02 02:28:00 I can't answer that Joe...try just deselecting the main one and see if it figures out the rest.
just a thought,
but you could just select Firefox and whatever else individually from synaptic and go from there
