1133233 2010-08-31 05:16:00 OK, permissions have been applied & I have access to the files.

All the files names look like this: ~$filename.doc

when I open them the text is gobbly gook

1133234 2010-08-31 05:18:00 Backing up the image with Acronis (i.e. True Image Home) then extracting the image, you can remove all file permissions.

Makes some things easier to work with.

Edit: ~$ files are temporary. There should be a plain .doc file with the same filename somewhere. If you find that it _should_ be readable.

unfortunately haven't been able to find any corresponding plain .doc files.

1133236 2010-08-31 05:23:00 Might need to scan the drive with a recovery program, possibly the files have been 'lost' due to filesystem corruption caused by the faulty hardware etc. Agent_24 (57)
1133237 2010-08-31 05:27:00 excellent suggestion - which I will attempt tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone - I will report back on progress.
