How to properly update PCLinuxOS.

Open Synaptic
Press Reload To get current file list
Click Mark All Upgrades
CLick Apply

DO NOT USE apt-get update and apt-get upgrade from the command line. This has never been recommended. If you insist on using the command line, the correct procedure is apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade. If for any reason the system says it is not able to retrieve a package do you wish to continue always say no, report it to the forum and try to update again later.

OK - now where is SYNAPTIC?

Found it!

Whoopie!

WOW - I got 9 packages ---- :thanks

(That MAY be premature, however!)

Then I got ---

Mark additional required changes?
and

The chosen action also affects other packages .
The following changes are required in order to proceed .

I MARK-ed them and went back to the screen that had the list, but this time nothing was checked . -----

So I clicked on ---

Mark All Upgrades

and ANOTHER notice popped in ---

Mark additional required changes?

. . . . . . . . . . and MARK-ed that window now too .

I then clicked on Apply and got a Summary Warning which asked -----

Apply the following changes?

with the following words----

This is your last opportunity to look through the list (like THAT would mean anything to me!) of marked changes before they are applied .

----and the item highlighted is >To be removed

This is where the wheels will prolly fall off . I thought I was trying to INSTALL something, not REMOVE things - right?

Ok - on to the rest of this now------------

--- so, anyway, I clicked on Apply and another window pops in and says that ---

1184 files are needed . HUH?

At this point I am gonna let it happen just for tickles - and see if it works OK or not . I'll report back when it all gets in and sorted out by PCLOS .

The time token said that this would take 42h25m12s, but that count-down is dropping pretty fast and is at 21m30s now only after about 5-minutes .

854295 2010-02-01 22:34:00 Yes, but I seldom advise others to do so!;) KarameaDave (15222)
854296 2010-02-01 23:27:00 Yeah I would assume that if the card reader is SD-H then it can read SDHC cards, which is a good thing. Agent_24 (57)

Is there some sort of progression to the designations on SD cards? I mean - a S went to SD then to SDA then to SDB then SDC - etc?

Is it an upgrade thing of just requirements and changes in some design?

854298 2010-02-02 00:50:00 Secure Digital (SD) is a non-volatile memory card format developed by Panasonic, SanDisk, and Toshiba for use in portable devices. Currently it is widely used in digital cameras, digital camcorders, handheld computers, netbook computers, PDAs, media players, mobile phones, GPS receivers, and video games. Standard SD card capacities range from 1 MB to 4 GB.[1] The capacity range for high-capacity SDHC cards overlap, beginning at 4 GB, but reaching as high as 32 GB as of mid-2009. SDXC (eXtended Capacity), a new specification announced at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show, allows for up to 2-TB capacity cards.

The format has proven very popular. Changes to the interface of the established format have made some older devices designed for standard SD cards (≤4GB) unable to handle newer formats such as SDHC (≥4GB). All SD-cards have the same physical shape and form factor however, which causes confusion for many consumers.

SDHC stands for Secure Digital High Capacity

Edit -As Dave said, often older SD card readers will not read SDHC cards. I have this exact situation in front of me at the mo. SDXC cards aren't common yet, but they will be.

854299 2010-02-02 00:52:00 They started as SD (Secure Digital) then later along came SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity). A SD reader will not read a SCHC card I believe.
Oh, wratterus beat me this time!:D

854300 2010-02-02 00:59:00 SDA\SDCA = SD Card Association .

The original SD card is just SD . The original cards could only go up to 1GB . Some changes were made (SD v1 . 01) to allow up to 4GB but this was still not defined as SDHC .

When SDHC came out, it defined cards that were up to 32GB . So a 2GB card for example may not be SDHC, but will fail to read in some of the older devices that only support the original standard up to 1GB .

Unless your card reader specifically supports SDHC it won't be able to read SDHC cards . SDHC readers can still read the older SD cards, of course .

From 32GB onwards, the cards are defined as SDXC (SD Extended Capacity) all the way up to 2TB .

Then there is another standard, SDIO which allows peripherals like WiFi to be integrated into an SD card . If your SD card reader does not support this, the extra device will not be accessible .
