| 853689 | 2010-01-31 01:53:00 | If it is not working - change your tactics. If it's not working, trying forever long won't help and will only cost you, they may ask you I see gaps in your CV, so tell me what have you done? So you do say .... ah.. nothing. They will feel a lot better if you say, I couldn't get into IT so I got a role XXXX outside IT and still keeping an active eye for IT roles and here I am .... (at their interview or that they are reading your CV - front page your "objective" statement). If in 4 or 6 weeks you are applying for jobs and cannot get one interview - something is wrong with your approach. If you apply for jobs and it is 2 weeks after the deadline and no hear - forget it. If you are applying to agencies and 1 week no hear - forget it. Try temp - may be easier to get in. |

| 853690 | 2010-01-31 02:23:00 | When we went on Holiday last year went into to Computer repair shop and after chatting for about 5 minutes they said If I wanted a job I could start when ever I wanted. Ah yes but if you go threough the Aus job ads you'll see the pay is the same. $40K NZ = $40K AUS $30K NZ = $30K AUS. Now there is a slight difference with the exchange rate and all, but there is also a slight difference with rents and mortgages, never mind other things. No way. forums12345: I did not get an IT job last year, I did not get any kind of job at all. Join the club. |

No way . forums12345: I did not get an IT job last year, I did not get any kind of job at all . Join the club . Yes, but that is if you can actually get a job in NZ . There is probably a lot more competition for the NZ job, than there is for the OZ job, so $0 NZ in NZ is a heck of a lot worse than $40k Oz, in Oz . Also Ozzies like hiring NZers, because we are known to be hard workers . The job market over there is a lot healthier than in NZ, and I would expect theres to get better, while ours to get worse . |

I say branch into non IT - it gives you life experience, adds to the CV, keep a lookout for IT roles. Money is useful. If the same company have a IT role you can apply for it and since you are in the company already you may have the advantage. IT roles are not just IT companies. It could be government agencies in the IT business group, it could be charitable organisations, law firms, schools. I know someone from high school he is now in the UK as a IT contractor after a couple yrs working as a tech in a UK school. |

| 853697 | 2010-01-31 04:36:00 | Yup Aussie is easier I think, I have some cousins who are in Sydney for that reason, they are accountants. Not sure on their pay but from what I read Aussie pay is higher. Definitely. forums12345 where are you located? In NZ a office assistant who does PA activities and write up the minutes, signs off invoices and forward to the finance area gets 40-50k. This was a little project team of 5 or 6. PA for general manager prob gets 80k plus. |

Now there is a slight difference with the exchange rate and all, but there is also a slight difference with rents and mortgages, never mind other things . Thats all true . I Only went in to ask for directions, and to have a look at their shop . Told her I work in IT as well, doing the same thing they are - We basically chatted about whats their charge out rate, amount of work , hours etc - I mentioned I run my Own Business in NZ, she asked Whats the Name of it, I told her and handed over one of my business cards I carry in my wallet all the time - she looked me up . Thats when she said if you ever want a job its yours . She said they had so much on they couldn't keep up and its been like that for the last year or so - they are turning work away . I asked why not hire some more techs, she laughed and said the lazy buggers don't want to work . I wasn't looking for a job or anything, and got an offer . If I were looking then it would have been more serious . Those figures mentioned (to low) -- may be whats in the ads, but its not what the lady told me they pay . Sometimes, both in NZ and Aust, its being in the right place at the right time, or asking the "right people" - lots of jobs are not even advertised . |
