Lmfao.

Been in depots before and seen entire pallet loads fall off forklifts from 6 or 7 feet up, then hurriedly re-stacked and put on the truck for delivery. Looks alright from the outside but that shock went somewhere.

And there is one particular courier I see around town who insists on running across the road with more packages then he can carry, dropping them as he goes.

853197 2010-01-29 02:50:00 Once someone in the Post Office told me that if a parcel couldn't survive being tossed at a wall shoulder height and let drop to the floor it wasn't properly packed.

Well, I hope you informed them that handling of that kind is not the service people are paying for and that they should be ashamed their handling practices are so poor, and that they were idiotic for suggesting people need to factor that crap into their packaging.

853198 2010-01-29 03:23:00 May father received a clock from his sister via Fastways . It was smashed to pieces back and front (it was a marble case) despite being carefully packed, and labeled 'Fragile' all over .

My father (and aunt) have been trying to claim it from Fastways for weeks .

He says:
The Napier office said that anything can happen to parcels in the van or truck, being bounced around, or even having something fall on them in transit .

The upshot is a letter from them saying it appeared fine from the outside and that indicated no mishandling on their part .

They won't pay out .

They are a franchise, so it can often be difficult to communicate to the correct person you needto . I think laws over franchises do need to be looked at, because there isn't enough consumer protection for consumers who have to deal with franchises . The head office that oversees the franchises often don't want to know of a customer compliant, and will refer you back to the franchise owner .
With accepting courier parcels, unless you get them to wait while you open it to check it is ok, you should sign for it 'unexamined', otherwse legally they can just say that you signed that it was received undamaged . Also taking a photo before you open a parcel is a good idea, so you can prove the condition it is in . I always take photos of the box for expensive items that get delivered, especially if the box looks a little damaged . Remeber that you don't have to sign anything, and you shouldn't sign anything, unless you are 100% happy that it arrived undamaged .
It is actually the person that sent the parcels responsibility to put things right, not the person that received it . If it was a shop, it is up to the shop to provide you with a soloution, as it was the shop that entered into the contract with the courier .

853199 2010-01-29 03:28:00 If it looks fine on the outside it means that the "careful packing" didn't work. Look at something like Seagate's packing instructions for hard drives and scale up to fit the object. That probably means using a larger box than you first thought.

Hardrives are incredically fragile, even a slight bump could potentially cause damage. For a regular item, wrapping in bubble wrap, putting it in a box should be sufficient.

853200 2010-01-29 03:34:00 The last hard drives I bought I didn't get them couriered, I went and picked them up myself Agent_24 (57)

Actually they are reasonably robust when off & head parked.
Last time I looked they were good for 50 G's shock (as per manufacturers specs).. from memory....
They survive in laptops pretty well (usually)

853202 2010-01-29 03:58:00 A heavy marble clock inside a dropped box >> wouldnt there be some
damage to the box given the weight ????

853203 2010-01-29 04:02:00 Take them to the disputes tribunal. You will surely win...

That's what YOU think and NOT the disputes tribunal!

853204 2010-01-29 04:08:00 Hard drives are not fragile unless operating.

It's a clock, not just the fact it was marble. Marble is less fragile, however clock movements aren't necessarily.
You can pack to prevent movement and damage to outer surfaces but you can't stop them trashing something.

Now all this advice about making them wait while you open it - have any of you actually tried that? I have, he took the thing back and left.
I got left a letterbox card.

It is also bollocks, especially if receiving a large shipment of stuff, they are going to wait around, of course, while you open 10 computer boxes and 10 monitor boxes.
Not.
