853679 2010-01-30 22:19:00 I had no real luck finding an I.T job (2009) in finding an I.T job but I did get a 3 months contract though. I have being applying for I.T jobs day in and day out. I am still going no where. Anyone else in the same boat as me? forums12345 (15197)
853680 2010-01-30 22:25:00 I would say most people are looking for jobs in IT. What sort of work experience/qualifications have you got? ronyville (10611)
853681 2010-01-30 23:01:00 Many people get a career path that is not what they learnt.

It may pay to get work experience outside of IT and then use that experience to get back into IT at a later stage.

Have a friend who did some IT qualification, dunno what exactly, he is now working for a bank in a non-IT role, he's had customer service roles and into investment, not sure what now .... he's found a partner wants to settle down with a mortgage and is engaged.

853682 2010-01-30 23:08:00 Some recruiters may think, if you haven't got a IT role, what have you been doing?

They may expect people to further their studies, or other jobs if they cannot get into IT. Even if it is not IT experience it is experience nevertheless.

If you haven't been successful, you don't just apply and apply and keep the same recipe.

Getting interviews?
If yes, work on your interview skills and comm skills etc.

If not, my view is to get other work experience, you get to see the real world out there. You may even find something that is not IT you like.

I have a friend who was in the same position. He went to Oz, and found a job straightaway, and is earning more than he could in NZ. Sorry to say it, but moving to Oz can sometimes be the solution, as their economy is in a far better state then NZs.

853685 2010-01-31 00:50:00 So there you go.... get a job in a bank and before you know it, you'll have a partner and a mortgage!

853686 2010-01-31 00:51:00 What sort of IT job are you after, and what qualifications or experience do you have?

Companies are definitely hiring, even at entry level positions, although it's easier to find work if you have a lot of experience. A large, well known IT giant recently restarted their graduate programme (after originally cancelling it), and will be hiring a handful of new graduates in the next month or so.

Must admit that is true - When we went on Holiday last year and managed to get lost (only slightly) went into to Computer repair shop to get directions (as you do :) ) and after chatting for about 5 minutes they said If I wanted a job I could start when ever I wanted.

SWMBO asked why I was smiling after coming out - found out where to go-- OH and got offered a job --- F***in hell she says :groan:

853688 2010-01-31 01:11:00 I said it before, I got uni degrees - 2 bachelor and a postgrad dip, my first job was at a call centre as a temp, a few more jobs at office asst roles as a temp again before I made it into analytical roles at 40k then 70k plus salaries.

Sure I spent some time in the earlier days, didn't get in so I changed tactics.
Oh - I got my first job thru winz.
