1134684 2010-09-04 06:34:00 Long story shortish .... Had a few problems with my hard drive and in a previous post asked why "C" drive went through error correcting then appeared to die.

Screen Said .... Inserting an index entry with ID XXXX $SII or SDH of file 9 and XXXX got up to around 18902 before saying 100% complete ... then just didn't go any further even after an hour. Wouldn't allow any key to kick it in the proverbial, Ctrl+Alt+Del did nothing, and when finally cut power in frustration, it started all over again.

I've looked on Google and found similar problems, however, I can't seem to get my problem sorted.

I've replaced the old "C" drive with a new one, installed XP SP3 with all updates and slaved the old drive now designated "H"

In the new "H" drive I can open up windows, program files, downloads, etc, etc, but if I try to open My Documents .... Access Denied

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be most appreciative ... TIA

Got the receipt to prove ownership .... but think you mean something else

1134688 2010-09-04 08:58:00 Speedy ... is there any other work around for this problem ??? I've disabled my slave drive (H) in setup because every time I rebooted, it would automatically go through the "correcting error" sequence even though the new drive was set as 1st boot device.

Bypassing the checking and hitting F8 got me into safe mode ..... on the OLD (H) drive but it only loaded part of the drivers then hung.

If I try bypassing the old drive .... and I'm damned if I know why it's still being seen in the boot sequence .... I can't get it to boot into safe mode on the new drive.

Is there any way that I can copy the folder onto the new drive, take the slave out, then get into safe mode on the new drive and access it ??

1134689 2010-09-04 09:16:00 Is the new hdd master?? Did you jumper both of them properly? Do both appear in the BIOS? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1134690 2010-09-04 09:27:00 One thing that should work -- Forget about slaving anything .

Only have the Old Drive attached, boot from a Linux live CD, something Like Ubuntu .

Plug in a USB HDD / Flash drive, then from Ubuntu, navigate to your old my Documents folder ( wont need to worry about permissions) and copy the data to the USB drive .

Once copied, turn off the PC, disconnect the Old Drive . Attach the new, boot normally from it and transfer the data back to my documents .

Easy as falling off a log ;)

1134691 2010-09-04 09:45:00 Speedy .... made sure (3 times) that they were jumpered properly ..... that's why I can't figure it out.

Wainui .... Thanks for the info. I'll try it tomorrow morning and let you know how I get on ... If I try it tonight I might end up bashing the crap outta this piece of sh!t !!

1134692 2010-09-04 11:55:00 If I try it tonight I might end up bashing the crap outta this piece of sh!t !! Not a good idea to bash the hell out of it :badpc:

1. You end up stuffing it even more
2. Can end up hurting yourself as well.
3. Later when you claim down - its still stuffed and you think why the FU*K did I do that, as you are bleeding all over the place
4. Done that myself a couple of times with old heaps of crap -- you do feel good for a few moments though, esp the one I drop threw out the door :devil

Then SWMBO :wub told me off for leaving crap on the drive that could puncture the tires on her car mumble mumble, Hence my sig -- the BIG hammer :D

1134693 2010-09-06 09:31:00 Wainui ... if I was closer I'd shout you a beer or 5 !! Took me a while to figure out that the first burn of ubuntu was stuffed and wouldn't boot, but everything is good now.

The only other thing I'm unsure about is how to transfer all of my e-mails ... both sent & received .... not sure what file names they're kept under.
