It should be clear that in both situations the car has experienced the same change in momentum."

Yes but, a slight addendum...it's the time taken to stop, ie. rate of change of momentum, not just the change in momentum that is important, the rate of change gives the deceleration forces.

So the question that has to be answered do 2 identicle cars with crumple zones, colliding head on, come to a stop in the same time as one car with crumple zone would when driving into a stationary massive rigid body ? :banana

Here is a falacious conundrum.....

a) Velocities are relative, so relative to one car just before a head on collision with another, each doing 25 kmph, the other car has a relative velocity of 50kmph.
So the (relative) kinetic energy of that car is 1/2 x mass x 50^2 = 1250x mass.

b) However if each car is doing 25kmph, the kinetic energy of each is 1/2 x mass x 25^2 = 312.5 x mass
Therefore the total kinetic energy for both cars is 625 x mass, only one half of the figure in a) above.

855273 2010-02-09 03:50:00 You made the original statement without any supporting comment or evidence.

I don't believe what you claim.

I'm not going to bust my guts trying to prove you right or wrong.

Get over it.

855274 2010-02-09 09:43:00 You can sit on 100 in that passing lane if you desire FOLLOW THE LETTER OF THE LAW lol, ill be considerate and use my brain . Is the Law wrong with a 100 limit in those passing lanes YES, it need to be increased to 120 or reduce the slow lane to 80 take your pick .

So you are a 38 year-old dipstick going on 19 . The behaviours you advocate and the arguments you advance are simplistic at best, puerile more likely .

Don't use the passing lane unless passing, stay within the speed limit when passing, if they are doing the limit there's no need to pass anyway (you got a funeral to go to?) and don't waste your time wittering on about other drivers, examine the image in your bathroom mirror first .

The law is not wrong, it is the law, you simply disagree with its effects, but it is set for the lowest common denominators and just like other laws protect the young or defenceless, these laws take into account drivers of all abilities and vehicles of all capabilities, driving in varying conditions of lighting, weather and road condition .

Get over it .

855275 2010-02-09 09:54:00 Then what is a safe speed ? 0 Kms ?

The posted speed limit is a start but it shoudnt be a target.
100 kph fast enough for NZ roads and what is the blardy hurry other than rushing someone to a hospital.
No one wants to arrive dead on time, no need to be killed by death.

Lol I guess some people have very small minds and are unable to think for themselves and you are one of these people. If you can't see the danger you cause by taking an ENTIRE passing lane sitting on 100 to pass a large truck with people behind you trying to do the same, then its people like you that get others killed.

The Law is the Law no argument. I will continue to be thoughtful to fellow drivers behind me and drive with common sence in this "one" scanario until the road rules change

Not if it doesn't have a crumple zone :)

The answer to Shermos and zippity contratemps is in the energy connundrum, but listen carefully to what Goodyear Tires (www.box.net) have to say on the subject, then try to pick yourself up off the floor.....:clap

The solution is dont overtake if the closing speed is too slow

Yes and maybe no sometimes, you are right when saying "if they are doing the limit there's no need to pass" but there are some annoying drivers who will speed up to the limit on passing lanes and then back to 85-90 after that ...
