Also, by dint of a simple test you too can verify we have already got the fastest system in the world. Log on to the intertubes; check anybody else's time signals - - - we are 'way ahead.

855844 2010-02-14 04:37:00 Yes but they're not suddenly going to get free use of the Govts equipment are they? They're not about to spend billions rolling out fibre just to give it away, so there's the question of "Will it *really* bring the price of broadband down or not?"

Unfortunately Telecoms piss poor behaviour over the last decade cant be forgiven with this statement.

I think a Government controlled Fibre network is likely to be far more fair to all ISP's. I cant see it being a "lot" cheaper I have to agree with you, but it wont be rubbish DSL2 either :)

855845 2010-02-14 18:08:00 In some ways, I agree with you, though you'd be amazed at the internal leaps and bounds the company has been making in the last 12 months alone since the new CEO. Changes for the better have literally been flowing from the top down.

Interestingly enough, if you're claiming it's "rubbish", you're implying that all the difference with the Govt Fibre project will be in the last <2KM from the node -> premise. While speed decreases with the distance, there are many other upgrades happening elsewhere which have a great effect on things too, though the number one thing I've noticed personally is less congestion at the local-exchange-level through the backbone upgrade to it.

I can't see the Govt backing out of their project any time soon, so it really will be a "watch this space" scenario, but I can't say I like the thought of billions and billions of dollars being spent on "reinventing the wheel" when there's already dozens of Fibre backbone networks across the country.
