855823 2010-02-08 06:04:00 Now you can do some serious downloading (and hit the cap before lunchtime) :p R2x1 (4628)
855824 2010-02-08 21:18:00 If you are downloading a FLV file from youtube your best bet is either - IDM (Internet Download Manager) which is a paid application or Orbit Downloader which is Freeware.
Depending on your line speed which judgeing by the time it took you to download Ubuntu is Fast!! this should significantly increse your download speed !!

Personally, IMO Orbit is rubbish, and IDM, while good and advanced, is far too intrusive. I use Free Download Manager for 99% of it, and DownloadHelper with the integrated FireFox download manager for youtube.

Only thing Orbit is good for is RTMP stream capture, and even then it gets thrown easily by intro videos.

There's your issue, ditch Xnet, problem solved. They've got notoriously bad service as an ISP. I can easily pull in two HD videos from YouTube, while downloading, and on a VoIP call, no issues. I'm on ADSL2+ but due to distance from the exchange / node, I'm only sync'ing at 4100kbps.

Speedtest can be a very good idea of what your line is capable of, though it isn't the be-all and end-all solution. Pingtest is a GREAT expansion on this, and I'm pleased that they've added it to their arsenal.

Seriously, just ditch Xnet and your troubles will be far gone. Switch to Orcon, or even Telecom. Both by far the best ISP's in terms of quality as far as I'm concerned.

Terry Porritt,
Have a look at www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps
See if your exchange / cabinet has been upgraded to ADSL2+. If it has, then Orcon can still give it to you wholesaling off Telecom as far as I'm aware. It looks like you're just on an old plan. A quick call to them should be able to resolve that.

Chill... I've used both those ISPs, no problems. But even better experience has been Clearnet who I've been using for nearly 2 years now.

Telecom are the King of "notoriously" bad ISP's. Add to that they have single handily held Broadband back in NZ for a DECADE in the interests of protecting there own profits as most of us know.

Cabinitisation is arguably another way they are STILL playing games as most UCLL NZ ISP's dont have the $$ to install there own equipment meaning users will switch to Telecom. The government haven't fully realised this yet, always seem 5 years behind Telecoms games. The entire unbundling process has not been much more than a media circus.

Why do you support Telecom I don't understand?

Probably because we don't like cutting our noses off to spite our face.

Yes, my line has ADSL2+, and I'd thought of asking Orcon about wholesaling off Telecom, but on the other hand I'm happy with the present setup price, and speeds. The plan I'm on is no longer available from Orcon, it's a bit better than what they're currently offering, I'll wait until they unbundle in our area.

855831 2010-02-11 00:19:00 Strangely, ditching the frustration, ineptitude, incompetence and lies that Telecom so enthusiastically deliver was probably the most satisfying and rewarding experience in 45 years of computers for me. As pleasant as it was to be shot of the sods, I am never going to have a chance to do it again.

P.S. : Telecom are not paying me to write this ;)
