1134694 2010-09-06 09:53:00 Assuming you are using outlook Express, all you need to do is go into the store location for OE, and copy out the .dbx files.

This is from XP mode, but yours will be very similar.

The location is

C:\Documents and Settings\XPMUser\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{BE72803F-096D-4D60-A713-38D3BF0C7CA1}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

The XPMUser will be your User name

The Letters / numbers in { **********} will be a random number.

You will See files Similar to these (www.imagef1.net.nz) copy them to a backup location ( usb Drive etc)

Then open outlook Express -- File/ import / Messages / Microsoft outlook Express 6 / Import Mail from OE Store (www.imagef1.net.nz) / browse to the folder you saved them / Select the folder, not the actual .dbx file, (from memory) next box should give you the options to select which ones you want ( sent items etc) -- Then import and you will see them loading in.

Beer sounds good :drool

But not on a working week night ------- YEAH RIGHT :D

1134695 2010-09-06 11:07:00 Hi Wainui .... found the files through a search in Ubuntu. NOT in the same place as yours because I couldn't find the same XPMUser file ... and the files I retrieved seem very small ... ie Inbox is only 27.3MB I think I archived some older ones but don't know how they'd be referenced ... any ideas or another 6 pack :devil

Or are the files compressed ... just thought that may be why so small

Too tired ... misread your last post

1134696 2010-09-06 21:03:00 I couldn't find the same XPMUser file Just so theres no mistaking, you wont have XPMuser, you would have what ever your user name is C:\Documents and Settings\SP8's\Local Settings. wainuitech (129)
1134697 2010-09-06 23:11:00 OK Wainui .... got all the folders by using the path you suggested .... no worries.

Opening Outlook Express for file import .... I can't seem to open OE in Ubuntu so I have to ask the question, are you meaning that I should open it in OE on the new drive when installed ... or am I missing something ???

1134698 2010-09-06 23:49:00 Yep thats correct-- using ubuntu as a RESCUE/RECOVERY program you can usually copy the files/ Documents/ Pictures/music etc, emails (.dbx, .PST) address book (.WAB) to a USB drive.

Then boot normally on a good install of XP (in this case) and use the new Outlook Express ( which will be empty) to import the extracted files. You will need to re-enter your email account.

The same goes for any other data - when booted into a working OS ( XP, W7), simply plug in the USB drive, and copy the rescued files back to the new location(s). Of course any programs will need to be reinstalled as well, Eg: office, CD writing programs, etc.

1134699 2010-09-07 08:58:00 Wainui ... using Office Outlook 2010 which apparently different from Outlook Express going by the MS Site.

When you start Outlook 2010 loads on a clean install, it puts a folder into "My Documents" called "Outlook Files" .... it's on the new HD I'm using, however, it's not on the old HD which has had Outlook Express > Office 2003 > 2007 > 2010

The .dbx files you mentioned earlier I have transferred to USB and then into a file on my desktop. From what I can gather via MS site, I have to make a Windows Live Mail account and transfer from there back to Office Outlook ..... If you have any other suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them as things aint goin accordin to plan !!

1134700 2010-09-07 09:55:00 From memory I deleted the folder "Outlook Files" in "My Documents", its not there now and my Outlook 2010 works fine.

Since you are using XP thats a big advantage, you DONT need live mail, you can use Outlook Express > Outlook 2010 easy enough.

First open Outlook Express, import all the .dbx files into OE, set up your account etc as if you are going to use OE.

Close Outlook Express. Open Outlook 2010 - it "May" detect the new account in outlook Express and offer to import the mails etc across, if it does, then let it.

IF it doesnt offer, do this ( just checked My Outlook and all the options are there) Open Outlook 2010 - 1st create your account.

Click on File/ Open / Import As Shown here (www.imagef1.net.nz) then "Import from another program or File" As Shown (www.imagef1.net.nz) - Scroll down, locate "Outlook Express 4.X,5.X6.X or windows Mail" All going well It "Should" locate your outlook Express and Import the mails etc.

What you may find is the mails are imported into a new Folder on the Left called "Imported Mail" (I think thats what its called), there are your old mails, IF you want to move them to the new account, Open a folder in the Imported Mail section ( Example the inbox) - highlight all the mails, right click > Move, select Inbox, if Inbox is not shown, then select Other folder As Shown (www.imagef1.net.nz) - a list of all the folders will appear, select Inbox under Personal Folders --- Repeat for all other folders using appropriate boxes / Folder Names.

Once all the mails are safe in Outlook 2010, you can go back to outlook express and dump them from there if you want to gain back a bit of space.
