1133998 2010-09-02 08:00:00 I am checking out an old computer for resale in an op shop.
It has Win ME on it.
128 MB RAM
20 GB HDD
Dial up capable only at this stage (No NIC or Ethernet port. Hopefully I will change this)

Here is the problem: It came with an old Phillips 105S Monitor and I cannot get the visible screen area to cover the entire screen. It is just a much smaller box inside the screen area. I have tried to adjust the resolution but the window that displays with the settings is longer than the visible screen area, so any changes that I make I cannot "Apply" or "Ok". I have tred plugging it into a different monitor but still no joy.
Any ideas anyone?

1133999 2010-09-02 08:07:00 Sounds like you need to go into the driver settings (if something like the ATI or Nvidia drivers were installed) Speedy Gonzales (78)

1134001 2010-09-02 10:19:00 I couldn't find any sign of driver settings, so I have now installed Win XP on the computer. I found an old network card lying around the place and have put it into the computer and connected it via ethernet to my adsl modem/router. But, it doesn't show up in the Device Manager. I guess there is something else I have to do to get it working, right? Can anyone help here?

1134002 2010-09-02 10:21:00 You need the NIC drivers. You have to find out what the brand /model of the network card is then install the drivers for it. If the video drivers are installed, right mouse on the desktop.. Anything to do with video settings there? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1134003 2010-09-02 11:53:00 Thanks Speedy,
yes I thought it might need drivers. I had a real good look at the card and couldn't determine what the make and model is, The main name on it is "Focus Networks". I was looking for something like Realtek or AMD or similar on it.
Its pretty old and used to be in a computer I had in 2000. A friend took it out because it was in the way of the new sound card he put in for us. And at the time we only had dial up anyway.

The display problem I had has gone now with the new OS installed but I just need to get it on the net now.

1134005 2010-09-02 19:59:00 I dont think its AMD. Dont think they make NIC's (Well, I've never seen one). Under network adapters in device manager, double click on its entry. Go to the details tab, change it to hardware ID's. Highlight whats here, press Ctrl-C to copy this, then reply here, press Ctrrl-V to paste it Speedy Gonzales (78)

Just look at what is on the main chip - thats all you need - not the cards circuit board.

Whats this PC for? I wouldn't bother - you can get far more modern things than that dirt cheap these days.

1134007 2010-09-02 23:28:00 Many thanks Speedy, PCTek, Gary 67, for your input.
Guess what, I tried the NIC in the only other available slot and it now works! Trust me to pick the wrong one first time........

But then, how do I learn unless I learn from mistakes.

PCtek, the computer is one that was given to the Salvation Army shop where I work and I said I'd have a look at it and get it going which I have now done. They might get $20 or $30 for it from someone who hasn't got one at all and just wants one to start out on.
