855364 2010-02-04 18:24:00 This is an update to a thread (now closed) that I started nearly a year ago about Warehouse motor mowers. 10 months ago we went ahead and bought a Briggs and Straton mower from the Warehouse with a hard plastic grass catcher. It is not a Colt or Firebrand; it just says Briggs and Straton, Classic 37. Green metal body, black catcher. I think we paid about $300 for it, marked down at a $100 discount as the Warehouse does with its mowers on a regular basis.

Report: Excellent, no problems, cuts and catches grass just fine. Starts easy - as long as the primer button is pushed as per the instructions and you wait a bit. I would recommend this mower unless you don't mind spending $600+ for a mower with a name brand like Masport.

855365 2010-02-04 18:34:00 Well the important thing is the motor. B&S are good motors.
So long as the wheels don't have a problem or anything........

The wheels could be a problem sometime in the future. It is the one thing that looks cheap.

855367 2010-02-04 19:43:00 What kind of bearings dose it have in the wheels, proper ball bearings or just plastic nylon sleeves.

855368 2010-02-04 19:51:00 My guess would be the nylon sleeves or something else that is cheap. I will check later. Strommer (42)
855369 2010-02-04 20:34:00 For $300 ya cant go wrong even if it only lasted for 10 years and you dumped it.
Main thing is change the oil on it least once a year.

855370 2010-02-04 20:39:00 And use B & S oil, or straight SAE 30 grade oil. Modern car oils don't suit B&S motors at all well. Try to stick with 91 octane fresh fuel. It is an old style engine, which is good for it's planned use but that means old-style fluids are best. R2x1 (4628)
855371 2010-02-04 20:52:00 The old B&S engines were an exercise in building the most simple engine possible not even one xtra bolt or washer that isnt needed. Aluminium bore (so its not going to last long) and big ends just running in the ally con rods They are however in the Trabant category of machinery prefect (6291)

Interesting that modern car oils should not be used. Why? Have a look at the bottom of this B&S page (www.briggsandstratton.com) and you will see that multigrade oils can be used. There may be a reason why non-car oil should be used but my feeling is that when a manufacturer says to only use their brand of oil it is a way of getting more $$ out of a customer.

BTW, I may be unusual in that I have always changed motor mower oil twice a year. It is so easy to do and the amount of oil needed is small.
