| 1135240 | 2010-09-07 08:15:00 | I have an issue with broadband speed. Speedtest.net says 1.8mbps when things are good, but sometimes it is as slow as 0.1 mbps. Speed increases when I reset the modem, but after a while the speed drops again. The wireless speed also fluctuates wildy. If I hold my mouse over the cursor it says 54 mbps immediately after reseting the modem, but fluctuates between 1 and 48 mbps after this. It is typically around 24 mbps. This is not related to the speed of the connection - but the overall speed might increase if this speed increased (at least I hope so). It is not related to signal strength as it happens everywhere in house. My ping is between 20 and 50 ms. It is generally a bit lower when speed is faster. No packet loss, pingtest.net said my ping is all good. My modem is a Dlink 604T supplied by Telecom. They say they have no firmware upgrade for it. Dlink advised not to upgrade the firmware due to risk of frying the modem. I want to know: 1. Is my speed issue likely related to a faulty modem? Or some other reason? 2. Is there some setting on my modem that is causing the issue? 3. Can I upgrade my firmware without buggering the modem? Is this necessary (the firmware was installed in mid july 2007). Has a TX code in the firmware. 4. Any other comments or suggestions? Pete. |

| 1135242 | 2010-09-07 11:38:00 | Hi Pete, Welcome to pressF1! :) A few things: 1) Yes, it could well be your modem. They're generally budget modems, see here: www.c2s.co.nz 2) Possibly, but probably not. 3) Not likely to fix it, I personally wouldn't bother on that brand modem 4) Yes, try here: telecomwholesale.co.nz and see if you're on an ADSL2+ exchange / cabinet. Also, you said the ISP was supplied by Telecom, but didn't state who your ISP currently is? That can have an effect, as well as your plan. Cheers Chill. |

| 1135243 | 2010-09-08 11:22:00 | Seems abnormally slow. Are you far from the exchange - do your neighbours have the same speed problem. Have heard of a case where the house wiring caused the issue, can you shift your modem setup temporarily to the jack where the cable arrives from the street, at least inspect the house wiring | Ofthesea (14129) | ||
| 1135244 | 2010-09-08 12:13:00 | Probably not much point in upgrading the firmware, most likely it's a hardware problem with your line or your router. Borrow another router, if that doesn't help then ring Telecom and get them to look into it. |
