856912 2010-02-10 00:24:00 What is your opinion of Valentine’s Day?

Do you think that you need a specific day to tell the love of your life that you think they are special on just one day of the year? or

Do you think that it is just a load of American rubbish that the retailers of greeting cards, chocolate and roses have decided to adopt just to sell their wares at inflated prices?

Personally, I believe that neither my spouse nor I need to have anything to do this questionable practice.

I don’t believe that it is a nice thing to do to show how much you love that special person in your life. If you have any decent sort of relationship, the love of your life should know that already, as you tell them how great they are on a regular basis – not just once a year. It is just another ploy by retailers to relieve you of your hard earned money.

Well said - and so true, 1 day a year is nothing. About the most we ever do is get a card each.

Normally if I come around with flowers -- its OK what have you done or groveling for :wub

Mind you getting them sent to her work once in while out of the blue is nice. All the ladies fuss around her - then ask the above question ;)

856916 2010-02-10 04:30:00 Valentines? Pfft - I don't know a single person by that name, and they have certainly never done anything for my day.
Since the Dragons are firmly ensconced in foreign parts, I might just have a beer though.

856918 2010-02-10 04:40:00 Can't hurt. Can too. I've seen many women get in a tizz because her partner did not send flowers to work, or do anything as fancy as someone else.

I think it is over-commercialised and causes emotional blackmail. However florists benefit by hiking prices for the day.

Random caring acts is much more meaningful and genuine.

That's the behaviour of an idiot, Not the fault of Valentines day. I hope their partners laughed in their face when they confronted them about it.

There is no harm in a dedicated day to celebrate love and partnership, Participation is voluntary, and their are no constraints placed of individuals celebrating it all year long if they so wish.

Plus, It gives a young man an opportunity to make a move.

I recall one Valentine's... my sister-in-law had been hinting all evening the night before. Next evening my brother was in a twist - he hadn't gotten her anything and her face was like thunder. He and I were going out to play squash, but first he stopped off at the superette and asked the assistant - give me a Valentine's gift. Anything, just be real quick. I think he ended up with a box of choccies. She wasn't impressed!

My worst case scenarios... once I bought flowers for two girls at the office. Of course they all coo and check out each other's cards etc. Trouble was girlfriend #1 recognised my handwriting on girl #2's card. Needless to say grlfriend was soon to be ex-girlfriend.

Another time I made a similar mistake... sent my girlfriend flowers, and also flowers to another girl (my landlady's daughter). Landlady made a faux pax and, somehow recognising that the flowers for her daughter were from me, said, soto voce, but not soto enough, while my girlfriend was within hearing distance, that her daughter loved the flowers. Doh! No nookie for a week after that!

So, these loving gestures can turn around and bite you in the bum!

856921 2010-02-10 05:45:00 i remember a few years ago a chick flat mate of mine didnt get any Valentine thing from her boyfriend .
She went from a little anxiety at 5 o'clock to absolute rage by 10 o'clock that night.
He was out pissing it up with the boys after work. At one stage I thought I was inline for a bit of sympathy make the boyfriend jealous nooky but it it didnt eventuate. I was saying things like if you were my girlfriend I wouldn't forget you, cant believe someone would do this to a lovely person like you bal bla. If the boyfriend knew I would have got a hiding I think.
