1135972 2010-09-10 03:30:00 When I boot up I get a "Checker Board' type of display.
After several times of booting, it appears to come right.
Could this be a problem with my Radeon 9800 Pro video card.? I guess it is hard to offer a solution of what could be the possible cause of this problem, or are there numerous possibilities.?

1135974 2010-09-10 05:50:00 Yes. Run some stress tests on the card. Can you advise how I do that please.? Pato (2463)
1135975 2010-09-10 06:00:00 programs like Burn In Test (www.passmark.com) have the option to test the graphics, both in 2D and 3D - if the card fails on these then its failing. The program is a trail, but works fine. wainuitech (129)
1135976 2010-09-10 06:00:00 Probably not necessary - you are getting artifacts which means it's stuffed.
But:

www.futuremark.com

www.ozone3d.net

www.testmyhardware.com

Download, install and run.

All is normal - card is OK.
Anyhting else - it's not.

1135977 2010-09-10 06:15:00 Sounds like the AGP ATI card I had, it was fine till you right moused on anything. It brought up lines, all over the place. In the end I biffed it Speedy Gonzales (78)
1135978 2010-09-10 06:25:00 Thanks to all for your advice. It looks like it has had it.
My computer is fairly ancient now so it looks like I need to get a new one built. Cheers.

1135980 2010-09-10 09:40:00 Run the other software that PCTek also listed. See if you get the same result (card OK).

On burn in test, did you go into the Test Configuration options and tick the 2D and 3D as per The screen shots (www.passmark.com) -- Bottom screen shot on that linked page.

"Normally" if the card has a hardware problem it will falter during normal usage as well.

Does it give any sign of "playing up" after windows has booted and is up and running ?

Theres only two faults with computers -- Hardware or Software :D You just have to find out which it is.

No. After it has booted I get no further trouble. After a couple of times of trying to boot it goes into sleep mode and then boots correctly.? Also do I leave it in 50.?
