859383 2010-02-17 04:48:00 What's the general opinion of them arriving on time?

We booked a insulation / heat pump dude to give us a quote, never arrived despite communication via email to confirm a time .

Had a gas fitter who came over then didn't send us a quote, think he didn't find the gas pipe in the garage so maybe he thought he had to dig the ground - cos the kitchen was at the other side of the gas meter . He however did end up taking photographs on his mobile phone and was measuring the distance for the whole length of the house . .

Had another gas fitter who arrived maybe an hour after scheduled time which he did the job . . Is $650 expensive for a 2hr job to branch off a gas pipe in the garage dig a hole up the ceiling into the kitchen's floor and connect it to the new gas oven?

Cheers .

859384 2010-02-17 05:00:00 There's no real excuse for lack of communication - if a person is held up, or running late a simple phone call is all that's required, esp if the trade person is doing other work before hand.
communication via email to confirm a time I never confirm by email - always by phone as if something changes, the last thing people do is remember to look/reply to an email.

It also runs the other way - I have rung people saying I will be there in ??? minutes approx, get there and the buggers have gone out.

As for the cost -- I'd say its about right - had a security guy come over to fix our alarm - 10 minutes $65.

The look at a dentist's prices ---

859385 2010-02-17 05:04:00 I have no problem with tradespeople who can't be exact about their arrival time, and say e.g. "2-ish", or "I'm not sure exactly when I'll be able to come, but it's likely to be early afternoon sometime". If something goes wrong that's outside their reasonable control, and they ring to let me know, that's fine too - albeit rather inconvenient. While it may be annoying, they've let me know in advance that they can't be precise, and they're not sure when they'll be able to be there.

If a tradesperson tells me they will be there at a certain time and they don't show up at least vaguely close to that time, and don't bother to ring me to reschedule / let me know they're held up etc, then I'm no longer interested in that tradesperson and will get someone else. If they mysteriously show up a few hours later (assuming I'm even still around), they get turned away at the door - and they don't get paid. Basic courtesy is not that hard!

That was confirming a time with their office. They however requested my phone number and never called us. We been home the whole day.

859387 2010-02-17 05:35:00 I always ring if I am unavoidably held up for a job. Although if their account isnt up to date I dont ring if they ring asking my whereabouts its a good time to remind them about their overdue account
How ever when I go to a dentist/doctors appointment they are always running late.

859388 2010-02-17 05:42:00 I've been waiting since 1977 for a plumber to come and give a quotation for bathroom/toilet alteration. Terry Porritt (14)

Cost of materials = $??
That's probably the main expense . I look at husbands plumbing parts costs, never mind retail and think I should never complain about hardware prices ever again .

Here:
1 x 40mm waste tee $13 . 79
2 x 40mm waste elbows $12 . 38
1 x 32-40mm waste reducer $6 . 08
1 x 32mm waste trap $10 . 35
2 x buteline elbows $15 . 86
2 x buteline female swivels $21 . 87
2 x buteline tee connectors $16 . 65
2 metre 40mm waste pipe $39 . 38
2 . 5 metre buteline pipe $14 . 06

There was some weird ball valve thingy once too, couldn't believe a hunk of plastic with a tiny bit on it cost way more than a large hard drive .

Not too mention what the inner plastic thing in a cow tank costs . Insanity .

859392 2010-02-17 07:15:00 I've been waiting since 1977 for a plumber to come and give a quotation for bathroom/toilet alteration.

Husband got a call from a guy who seriously, really had been waiting 6 years for someone to quote him for spouting.

Unfortunately it turned out to be a bay window and the spouting he had, he wanted matched, he would have had to get it custom made to fit. Still, even so - 6 years!!!
