859061 2010-02-16 07:28:00 Has anyone had an e-mail from Trademe when selling something asking for proof of posession? SWMBO just got this:

Dear SWMBO,

From time to time Trade Me requires sellers to provide proof that the
goods for sale are in their possession.

We require you to provide proof that you are in possession of the following items:

*******************************

To provide proof of possession you need to take a photo of this item(s)with a recent New Zealand or Australian newspaper, clearly showing the date on the paper, and emailing the photo to proofofgoods@trademe.co.nz

We can only accept a photo with a recent New Zealand or Australian newspaper. We will not accept:

* images of boxes
* separate images where the same goods are being sold. If you are selling more than one of the same item we will only accept an image where all the identical goods are in one photo.

Until you provide proof that you have this item in your possession you will be unable to edit this auction. Buyers will still be able to participate in this listing, however if the listing closes without you providing proof of possession then the trade will not complete.

Please get back to us as soon as possible, as you will be unable to list or re-list any items until you have provided us with the photo.

We appreciate your cooperation with this request.

You can’t reply directly to this email but if you have any questions regarding this policy, decision or any other issue, we’re happy to discuss this with you. Please contact us using the below link:

www.trademe.co.nz

Alternatively, to have your questions answered instantly, you can contact Trade Me via 0900 TRADE (0900 87233). Please be aware, calls cost $1.99 + GST per minute.

859062 2010-02-16 07:31:00 They did this to me once before. Does this to other people too from time to time. qazwsxokmijn (102)
859063 2010-02-16 07:43:00 Me too - November last year. No problem. I just took photo of advertised items on a chair with the newspaper hung over the chair back. Of course, first reaction was "Who me!?! They don't trust ME!?!" and other shock horror, but then I thought about it and realised it's a great idea and makes me feel more confident about buying on TradeMe. coldot (6847)

859065 2010-02-16 08:19:00 I heard in the states, those even who used a escrow service, the scammers would sell stuff but they had boxes of paper instead of expensive items ..... But then they had a registered mail ticket to prove it .. Nomad (952)
859066 2010-02-16 08:20:00 What happens to individuals that don't have a digital camera and who only use film like 2 rolls a year? I had a good couple who don't even know how to use a mobile ph for text messages - that is due to tech illiterate or a language issue .. Nomad (952)

Good way for them to sell papers, considering they are also in the newspaper business. We don't buy papers. Also is trademe willing to reimburse the price of the paper.

859068 2010-02-16 08:29:00 Surely $1.80 for the NZ Herald is a small price to pay for ensuring you don't lose $1,800 on a fake auction? pcuser42 (130)

Most who sell stuff on Trade Me would have a camera, or borrowed one, in order to list and display what they are selling. Of course you don't have to provide a picture when listing but usually those auctions with pictures are more popular.
