| 858112 | 2010-02-13 23:18:00 | I have an old Sony Trinitron 25 inch colour TV (KV-2553GWT). The TV is pretty old and is based on the older CRT technology. The TV has performed beautifully all these years but 2 days ago the picture started shrinking (vertically) and is now only about half its normal size. The "half" picture is still very clear but skewed at the upper and lower edges. Volume is clear.Any suggestions what could be wrong and any easy way to fix it? Do you know of any good TV repairman in Hamilton who could solve the problem without costing me a bum. The TV has sentimental values and my wife is not keen to part with it yet. | hsujagar (15627) | ||

But if they exist down there (like here), they'll probably charge you an arm and a leg, like they did with me ($350 to fix a power fault). And they still didnt fix it (they fixed the power prob, but created a new screwup). The PIP doesnt work. Even tho I sent it back 3 times. In the end I gave up and got another TV ( widescreen), the other is a 29" sony trinitron |

It is only a loss of height and should be a reasonably easy fix. Forget NEXT, they will do a walletectomy on you regardless of whether they repair or not. Any company will charge a rejected quote fee if you don't go ahead but some charge a lot more than others. Cheers Billy 8-{) |

Trinitrons were the top CRT technology, only now are LCDs rivaling it in terms of viewing angle and colour. New flat screen TVs though do sport a higher resolution, so if you did replace it, you would lose a bit of viewing angle but gain resolution (for freeview HD) | utopian201 (6245) | ||

Yes, it most certainly will cost more to fix it, but that cost wouldn't even be the deposit on an LCD TV worth having, and the Sony probably has another 10 years in it, by which time you'd be on your second LCD TV, because they are rarely repaired if at all, not even for insurance companies. When they die, you dump them. As I have said before, my Panasonic 22' is well over 26 years old and performs as-new, and the 26' we had before we got an LCD was a similar age (older I think) when we sold it on TM and it was still going just as well. For such a simple fault it is well worth having the Sony looked at. Cheers Billy 8-{) |

| 858121 | 2010-02-16 03:45:00 | I agree with Billy T. It might be cheaper to buy a cheap LCD now, but I don't think it's worth it. Especially since your Sony will be of much better quality than most of the junk for sale these days. I'll be hanging on to my old Philips TV as long as possible. |
