858128 2010-02-13 22:10:00 We all know that in two or three years time the government will switch off analogue transmissions and all TV reception will be from digital transmissions only. What confuses me is whether our current analogue TVs will still work with a UHF aerial and a digital decoder, eg either a Freeview decoder or similar, or whether the TV has to be dumped and a digital TV purchased?

If it will not work, does this mean that a TV being advertised as having an analogue television tuner will not work either?

858129 2010-02-13 22:14:00 Your TV will still work, its just that the analogue tuner won't have anything to pick up - you will still be able to play content from other sources, such as a Freeview decoder, Tivo, a PS3, DVD player etc. :) maccrazy (6741)
858130 2010-02-13 22:15:00 A set top box and your current TV will be fine. (Well, as fine as it is now.)
An analogue tuner will work only on Analogue broadcasts, the set top box by-passes the set's tuner. If you have a really antique video recorder that only has RF out, you will need an analogue TV to view it

858131 2010-02-13 22:20:00 Yes, I realise it will still work but just won't receive any TV reception. That wasn't the question, however. Obviously I didn't word it clearly enough.

Will I no longer ever be able to watch TV on it? Or will I be able to watch the same channels as I do now if I purchase a digital decoder when analogue reception is turned off?

Edit: R2x1's post wasn't there when I started to reply. Now I'm even more confused. :p

What does the video recorder have to do with it?

Why I am confused is because I read something somewhere that said all the old analogue TVs will need to be dumped when the digital transmission starts. But looking at some of the current TV adverts on Noel Leeming there is at least one that says "Analogue television tuner". Now, what is the point of buying that if you won't be able to watch anything with it in 2012 or 2015 when analogue transmission is turned off???

858132 2010-02-13 22:38:00 If you have a set top box, your present TV will let you watch the digital programs. They do it now, nothing will change there.

What will change is that there will be nothing on live TV to watch if you don't have a set top box.
Buying a new TV with only an analogue tuner would not be a totally great idea unless it is ultra cheap, will only be fed from a recorder/player or a set top box, and a high definition picture is not required.

858134 2010-02-13 23:24:00 I was wondering about this too. At present our reception is from a translator just up the hill behind our house, UHF and high band VHF.
Is "free to air" digital TV going to be broadcast on UHF from the same translator sites as are used at present for analogue?

858135 2010-02-13 23:27:00 How much of the country gets digital UHF TV now?
Got it in Glen Eden does make any difference which way aerial is pointing blardy strange.
Although chinese tv 8 and prime reception sometimes goes to cleaners. I need a proper UHF aerial instead of my dse uhf/vhf combo.
Until I bought a new lcd tv a month ago I had 2 set top boxes one sat other uhf.
Which reminds me anyone want a crt sony tv for nothing? its fault is it works ok for about 10 minutes and the picture goes. Then it come back on perfecto for hours then whamo piccy goes on holiday.
What annoys the **** outta me is the fact sat and uhf channels arent the same.
Cant get cctv8 on sat and I cant get stratos to watch voa on uhf.

This what youre after ? (www.freeviewshop.co.nz). It looks like freeview DVB-T here runs off the same transmitter (Waiatarua) as analogue TV in Mt Eden.

Stratos isnt available on UHF, thats why you cant get it, and CCTV isnt available on Satellite. According to this (www.freeviewnz.tv). If both had the same channels, then people wouldnt bother getting satellite

It would be if our translator was listed there :)

We are in a valley, and the Wellington transmitter at Kaukau, and all other translators like Fitzherbert are completely shrouded, the only watchable TV is from the Emerald Hill translator about 50 metres behind us......not that we actually watch TV except for 6pm news :)
