We found a sink that fit out older kitchen table. We enquired a smaller custom made sink - it was nearly two grand.

859394 2010-02-17 08:50:00 Cost of materials = $??
That's probably the main expense. I look at husbands plumbing parts costs, never mind retail and think I should never complain about hardware prices ever again.

Here:
1 x 40mm waste tee $13.79
2 x 40mm waste elbows $12.38
1 x 32-40mm waste reducer $6.08
1 x 32mm waste trap $10.35
2 x buteline elbows $15.86
2 x buteline female swivels $21.87
2 x buteline tee connectors $16.65
2 metre 40mm waste pipe $39.38
2.5 metre buteline pipe $14.06

There was some weird ball valve thingy once too, couldn't believe a hunk of plastic with a tiny bit on it cost way more than a large hard drive.

Not too mention what the inner plastic thing in a cow tank costs. Insanity.

There is a lot of competition in plumbing fittings as a lot are made in Thailand and commy china.
Maybe there could have been an el cheapo valve your husband could have slapped on.

859395 2010-02-17 08:55:00 For our $650 job don't think there were much parts, we were home.

The European made Oven had its own regular. All he did was cut a gas pipe and stuck a double adaptor on it ... piped it upstairs by drilling a hole via the ceiling, plugged it in. 2hrs work.

Ok .. maybe $90/hr is the standard .. $450 in parts?

859396 2010-02-17 09:15:00 The look at a dentist's prices ---

Going slightly off topic

Next Monday I have to go and get a filling and its going to cost $120 just for one filling. I don't know how they can justify the cost of getting a filling.

859398 2010-02-17 10:07:00 I've been waiting since 1977 for a plumber to come and give a quotation for bathroom/toilet alteration.

 I can relate to that, only not quite as long ago as 1977.

859399 2010-02-17 10:14:00 What's the general opinion of them arriving on time?

We booked a insulation / heat pump dude to give us a quote, never arrived despite communication via email to confirm a time .

Had a gas fitter who came over then didn't send us a quote, think he didn't find the gas pipe in the garage so maybe he thought he had to dig the ground - cos the kitchen was at the other side of the gas meter . He however did end up taking photographs on his mobile phone and was measuring the distance for the whole length of the house . .

Had another gas fitter who arrived maybe an hour after scheduled time which he did the job . . Is $650 expensive for a 2hr job to branch off a gas pipe in the garage dig a hole up the ceiling into the kitchen's floor and connect it to the new gas oven?

Cheers .
plumbers, gasfitters, your lucky to even get one let alone ask for one to be on time !
i know a few that had 3 month waiting lists .
things like quotes get bumped to the back of the queue if they are busy .

every trade a bit different, i got sick of the consumerism mentality . years ago if you couldn't do the job in a week, forget it customers has gone elsewhere . then it was 3 days . it got to the stage that even people in the sticks wanted a job done that day or not at all .
even had mongrels who bought gear from a shop (nothing to do with me), rang me wanting it installed that day, told them i could do it in 2 days time so they took all the gear back to the shop they bought it from and went elsewhere .

customer service can be a 2 way street ;)

859400 2010-02-17 10:41:00 We (one of which is the Dragon) have had splendidly good fortune with all the tradesmen we have employed for the last 3 or 4 years except one ratbag "mechanic" she employed to put random holes in the back of her car while not fitting a towbar. I gave the sod the heave ho and did it myself, then chased the employer and demanded satisfaction She had to make tea AND do the dishes before the serious haggling even started. If we need something fixed, either she, I, or sometimes both do it. The job is done to our satisfaction, we get helpfull, friendly service, a great warranty, and seriously pleasant after-sales service.
(I fear should SWMBO ever see pctek's TV cabinet, there may be an urgent need for upskilling in the joinery contngent.)
Any other scheme for domestic repairs seems like a game of chance sometimes, and playing with the other guy loading the dice
Lawn mowing & gardening however, I would cheerfully give to anyone silly enough to take it on.

I spent $700 for a root canal, that fractured in about a year. I haven't thought about it but a implant job would cost $6,000-.8,000

I think it was $120 for a tooth extraction on top o the $65 initial checkup fee.

I think most of us here, though, aren't expecting to be seen OMG NOW, but when a tradesman gives you a time and date for when they will come, and then they just never show up, never call, etc.

I would never expect to just forget about going to a job, it's ridiculous.
