| 858919 | 2010-02-18 18:30:00 | I recently started surfcasting here in our town. Still on the trail of the big Scnapper (!), but then I don't mind catching small ones/medium sized ones - I get more enjoyment out of the "just being there" moment and it really helps with the stress. sarel |

I've never heard of anyone filleting flounder before. You just flour them and put them in the frying pan whole, cook one side, turn over and cook the other side then put them on a plate. To eat you just peel the skin off, pick out the meat, peel skeleton away then eat the other side. Very little waste cooking and eating them this way. Giving whole fish to cats is a gross waste of good fish. :( |

But why would you peel the skin off after you have cooked it? Flounder skin is absolutely beautiful, and you can spend a lot of time/gain a great deal of pleasure from picking off the fins and small bones around the edge of the fish and crunching them up . Drool! Perhaps you are confusing flounder and sole, FoxyMX? You do need to peel the skin off the latter because it is too coarse - kind of scaly . |

| 858925 | 2010-02-18 21:49:00 | We got a flounder net - husband and one of the cats likes flounder. We set off this morning and got 16 flounder and 4 crabs. Not intending to catch crabs but........ Got some seaweed for the garden too. It was good fun. Pix or shens! |

| 858926 | 2010-02-19 01:13:00 | You can buy flounder fillets at some fish shops, but I have never come across an amateur filleting them either. What a waste... So loads of people have told me, including husband. He always incinerated them in a pan then picked bits of flesh off the resulting stuck, smashed looking remains. (OK, small exaggeration). He had one whole for lunch then I cooked him one (4 fillets) for tea and he was too full to eat the whole 4 fillets. So - I got more actual fish off than he did using his method... My mother filletted everything except sardines. I have to say, it was easier than filletting a trout. I got all the flesh off, hardly anything left to pick off for the cats - in fact only the head really had anything for them.....(and I don't give them the bones - too fine) Friends round the road used to cook whole until his sister came over one day and showed him how efficient the fillets were. Anyway didn't take any skill to walk through the water pulling net along. Fish just appeared in the net all by themselves. We just then pulled the net out onto the sand and tossed the slimy things into a bucket. Easiest fishing I've ever done. Other friend who came with us, rang this morning to hint at going out again. I'm keen, husband is going to hack trees down this weekend though so might have to leave it till week after...... Didn't take pics. Husband wants to show off his wetsuited self to friends apparently so might next time. Anyway, everyone knows what a flounder looks like. I was looking for recipes today, rather than the usual boring fried in butter, serve with lemon t hing, could try something a bit posher...... |
