We lived next to a farm that turned horses to dog tucker 30 years or so ago. The missus was a horse fanatic and initially a bit upset when she found out. However, when she saw how decrepit old nags arriving at the place perked up once they got decent grazing and some equine companionship, she gradually decided that as a a sort of "horspice" it gave the old horses a bit of a decent quality of life for their last weeks or months. Some of the horses were there a very long time, it was almost as if they were recycled when they were just too past it and had to be put down. |
