2010-09-20 08:23:00 | First things first..I sometimes download and install software that might be dodgy. I'm not interested in being told I shouldn't do this and I shouldn't do that. I'm a big boy. All my data is backed-up some place else, so if it's a major I'll just reformat my pc. I just want an explanation and a solution to the immediate problem. I got home tonight, booted-up my Windows 7 PC and music started playing for no reason. I went into task manager and found none of my audio/visual programs were running. I went into network manager and found that network activity is at @10%. Performance manager is surging between 80-100% CPU. My antivirus is disabled.

2010-09-20 08:34:00 | I had a trojan infection a few weeks back that has the same symptom - see this thread (www.pressf1.co.nz). In the interim, disable system restore, and do all the usual scans with malwarebytes/NOD32/trojan remover, and post a HJT log too.

2010-09-20 08:45:00 | Thanks. This process confuses me so I'll tell you how far I've got, Run anti-virus with latest definition update. (I've uninstalled/reinstalled avast). Install latest MS security updates. But then what? I've never been able to figure out how to use Hijack This.

2010-09-20 10:24:00 | 1. Get rid of Avast - it's not flash. Use the uninstaller from here (files.avast.com) 2. Download NOD32 from here (www.eset.com). Pick 32-bit or 64-bit depending on what your Operating System is. Make sure you get the Antivirus, not the Smart Security. 3. Install it, and run a full scan. 4. Download Hijackthis from here (www.trendmicro.com). When you run it, pick the option to scan and save a log file. Post the log file here for Speedy et al to look at.

2010-09-20 11:04:00 | Does sound like some infection has gotten in. Seen a few these days that will kill an AV. Along with what Nofam and speedy said, I'd suggest getting Super antispyware, and Spybot S&D - run those as well in full scan modes. Links in my sig. SWMBO go hit by a drive by download on Sunday while looking a recipe sites, I was there looking over her shoulder deciding what she should bake and all of a sudden WHAM out the blue one of the Antivirus pro infections hit, Nod stopped it dead.
