860313 2010-02-21 05:43:00 I don't really know much about cars so was wondering if anyone mechanically minded could post any thoughts about these...

Toyota Corolla 1990 (www.trademe.co.nz)

Toyota Starlet 3 Door 1990 (www.trademe.co.nz)

Nissan Primera TE 5 Speed 1992 (www.trademe.co.nz)

Mitsubishi Galant VR-G 1996 (www.trademe.co.nz)

Cheers

860315 2010-02-21 06:09:00 About 2.5-3 grand. Looking at getting something half-decentish for a first car.

Also, something not too powerful.

860316 2010-02-21 06:18:00 While I can't comment on a car's condition, I can definitely recommend checking all these vehicles out at www.carjam.co.nz For NO fee you can normally see the WoF history and an estimate of what the car would sell for at Turner's Car Auctions.

I note that the Corolla is a 1989, not 1990 and the Starlet's registration appears to have expired.

Toyotas - motors go and go and go. Generally all made of tinfoil and destruct when you hit a feather.

Nissans, have a good reputation as well, the one I had I thought was a nightmare once you opened the bonnet. Take the lot out just to get at minor things. But then most are probably like that now.

Mitsubishis - gone right off them, had 2 that had loads of problems not to mention rusted like mad.

860320 2010-02-21 08:52:00 Buying a 'cheap' car, and you may (most likely you will) end up with expensive repairs just to keep it going. The repair costs may well more than the purchased price. Garages are charging from $60 - $80 per hour for labour. It is very expensive to maintain a 'cheap' car nowadays.

Of course, if you are a car mechanic yourself, then it's a totally different story.

Thats my reasoning on raising my budget to 3k or so. I was originally only going to spend under a grand lol.

Hopefully I'll be able to get something ok for that price!

Thanks for all your input guys!
