i bought some of that silicon sealant stuff for the bath....... white...... and the salesman says it gets a bit messy, use the masking tape........ i decided to hell with the masking tape cos i cant get it round the taps....... and the wall has a gap big enough to just squeeze the tube to clog it up just fine....

well for all of approc 2 meters around the bath i think the tube is probably ready to throw away i never want to see it ever again......... 3 pairs of gloves later, one ruined towel and silicon in places i never noticed or envisiogned........

maybe getting someone else in who is in the trade might help next time....

i am resealing around the bath so i can safely rip out the old shower and have some where still to bath or shower......... sigh.... all good in logic, but i fear it might be put off again........... cos god what a mess i make every time i do DIY........ :p

860071 2010-02-20 04:57:00 Hardware stores used to sell a roll of 'pre-formed' silicon sealer that you just poked into the cracks. Otherwise go with the detergent.
I seem to remember something about vinegar being used to clean off the lumps in the wrong places - or was that something to do with fish & chips - skip that thought!

860072 2010-02-20 05:30:00 Heh, yeah, there's an art to doing it neatly, and it's all too easy to get a complete $%#*&@ job. I've done more poor jobs than good ones!

I was pleasantly surprised at the good result masking tape helped achieve. Part of the trick though is still to work the edge of the sealant faily thin towards the edge of the tape, and make sure you peel it off well before it dries. Actually - peeling it off becomes the messiest bit. I suggest you peel it off and shove it directly into a supermarket bag or similar to prevent the mess getting further out of hand.

Also true regarding the detergent.
I like to shape a tool to match the task - just cut and file a piece of plastic from the likes of the side of an ice cream container, and use that to smooth out and spread your sealant, then do the detergent tric to fix up any minor flaws.

860073 2010-02-20 05:46:00 As others have said, detergent and masking tape is the way to go. Also, make sure you push the tube away from you rather than pull the silicone bead towards you, as this tends to pull the bead loose (this is usually explained on the back).

And if you are going to use your finger to shape it, always use a glove especially in a bathroom - your skin carries a lot of bacteria, and if this gets into the silicone in a wet area, it will blacken and fail very quickly.

860074 2010-02-20 08:48:00 It always turns to ****, if you dont use masking tape because you will get excess in some parts and not enough in others.
Start taking off the excess you gunna have a major mess when you wipe it with a rag you start smearing it on some where else. Too thin you have to run a second bead which will turn out to be too much.
Masking tape both sides of the joint and spit on your finger and run it down the bead.

860075 2010-02-20 11:25:00 If it is a temporary stop-gap (sorry) measure while repairs are in progress, try using duct tape to fill the gap; it is easy, much cheaper and will last ok for a couple of months. R2x1 (4628)
860076 2010-02-20 20:53:00 Apply silicone, spray with dishwash and water mix before attempting to smooth out with a tool as this way it doesn't stick where you don't want it to to. By spraying it along the full length you get a much better finish and it makes less mess. I do this at least once a week as part of my work and stopped using masking tape a long time ago gary67 (56)
