859482 2010-02-17 20:53:00 Have you ever crossed a road within 20 metres of a pedestrian crossing and NOT used the crossing and instead J walked? If you have did you know it's illegal in NZ:

www.transfund.govt.nz

If you are within 20 metres of a pedestrian crossing or traffic signals, you must use the crossing, footbridge, underpass or pedestrian traffic signals to cross the road.

Wonder what the punishment is, if any.

Did you know it's illegal to walk on a median strip:

www.huttcity.govt.nz

Median strips are not pedestrian crossings, use with care. It is illegal to walk along a median strip.

Hey is riding a push bike on a footpath illegal?

859483 2010-02-17 21:10:00 Last question - yes.

However I saw two cops biking to work at 9pm the other night, one was on the footpath, I was crossing at a set of lights and didn't press the button and wait, they didn't look twice. Though don't know if that's the same thing.

859484 2010-02-17 21:17:00 Yer I do it. And yup it is illegal to ride on a footpath. I saw a guy cycling with no helmet the other day. Wonder if the cops saw him lol. They were parked down the road, in the direction he was heading Speedy Gonzales (78)
859485 2010-02-17 21:24:00 Under some circumstance you may ride a cycle on the footpath. From the NZTA site:-

•Don't ride your bicycle on a footpath unless you are delivering newspapers, mail or leaflets, or there is a sign indicating it is a shared pedestrian and cycle path.

859487 2010-02-17 22:13:00 Living and retired on a main road I can observe lots of cyclists etc and the vast majority use the pavement not the cycle track. Especially school children.
I don't blame them - they are far saver there and the number of pedestrians is extremely low anyway.

Cycles mix much better with people than with cars and this should be encouraged but I cannot understand why cyclists no longer use cycle bells - mixing with pedestrians needs some warning device and even during the last war when as kids we travelled everywhere by cycle we used to collect parts to make up a working cycle bell. Without one we wouldn't have gone more than a few hundred yards without being pulled over by the local cop (in those days they actually walked round).
Anyway cycle bells are probably the only warning device which have a pleasant sound.

I agree with you that it's safer to cycle on the footpath.

Just don't know why the politicians made it illegal to do so.

If someone needs to be told that.... they're due for a meeting with Mr Darwin.

Because they had nothing else to do and decided lets ban bikes from using the footpath.

859491 2010-02-17 22:38:00 I agree with you that it's safer to cycle on the footpath.

Just don't know why the politicians made it illegal to do so.

Possibly because the popularity of cycling has increased to the point that they recognised that bikes travelling at 30km/h plus did not make for a safe blend with pedestrians on a footpath.

Pedestrians can - and do - change direction instantly and unpredictably, whereas a bike travelling at speed cannot. Not a recipe for good result, especially if they have their backs to the bike - even with a bell, which most bikes do not have these days)...
