Because I am a 'casual' shipper, the major Courier companies will charge $400+ to collect in Sydney and deliver in Auckland. Their calculation based on volume increases the weight by over 20kg.

At that rate I could probably fly over for a day on cheap fares, and pick it up myself, bringing it back for not much more than the fares + excess baggage cost, plus carpark fees, and it should land GST free as being for personal use.

If I open an account, in theory it will cost me only $290 or so, but there will be probably be a fee to open an account and I guess that GST will be added at every twist and turn, plus GST on the cost of the replacement as well, and who knows what else will get tacked on.

I'm beginning to wonder if parcel post might not be a workable option, if I can persuade them to take it to a PO! It could well within the size and weight that NZPO accepts for shipping overseas, so maybe OzPost are similar.

Cheers

That's the nicest thing you've said to me in months Ciccy, but you are not wrong, you could write a soap opera around the goings-on at Chez Billy. I only report the edited highlights.

Some days it's a cross between a circus and a lunatic asylum, but other days it can be worse.

859827 2010-02-28 04:53:00 Billy, have to agree that a day trip to Sydney might be quicker and probably at no greater cost, probably less, than shipping it direct.

Have twice had reason to do just what you are possibly thinking of myself when parcel or cargo freight was going to more expensive than *carrying* it myself.

I would offer but it is rare for me to go out via Sydney and usually direct to Christchurch and I don't always have business in Auckland, plus I usually travel out via Melbourne anyway.

You would need to factor in insurance in case the friendly baggage handlers at Sydney get overly excited to load the plane.

You have a good selection of services running between Auckland in the morning to Sydney and departing back in the afternoon/evening.
