1139343 2010-09-24 08:54:00 Well, this one’s got me scratching my head.

A mate’s computer has taken it upon itself not to play any sound from Internet Sites.

It plays saved sound fine and there are no ! or ? under System/ Hardware/Device Manager.

The Sound tests perfectly using the AC97 test facilities but it refuses to play anything from You Tube. The Video is fine.

Any help appreciated. :thanks

Win XP.

1139344 2010-09-24 09:03:00 What browser is he using? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1139345 2010-09-24 09:08:00 Check browser Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Mutimedia. Is there a check mark in the play from Web box. If you are using IE that is. Snorkbox (15764)
1139346 2010-09-24 09:18:00 Thanks Guy’s, I think it’s IE6, but it’s definitely IE something.

I’ll check.

The problem has just come out of the blue.

Avast thinks the system is squeaky clean as far as a Virus goes.

1139347 2010-09-24 09:22:00 He'll have to update it. Or use another browser. Youtube will be phasing out IE6 / will no longer be supporting it. Speedy Gonzales (78)
1139348 2010-09-24 10:16:00 Youtube will be phasing out IE6 / will no longer be supporting it.

Youtube no longer supports IE 6, but you can still play videos fine in IE 6. (Iam using IE 6 and all Youtube videos play fine with sound.)

I would try uninstalling flash and reinstalling it, and if that does not work, try reinstalling the audio drivers.

PS: is he using Win XP Sp 3?

1139349 2010-09-24 10:18:00 It'll probably change (if it still works now) sooner or later Speedy Gonzales (78)
1139350 2010-09-25 03:44:00 maybe there is something wrong with fan, and try to find out the issues faith1806 (15972)
1139351 2010-09-29 22:56:00 Ok guys, I’ve now had a chance to double check your suggestions.

Firstly, Internet Explorer is Ver. 8.0.6.0 and the "play sound from Internet" option is ticked in Options/Advanced.

Secondly, I updated Macromedia Flash player to Ver.10 but that didn’t help.

It really is a mystery because it was working fine but just stopped.

As I said earlier, sound files stored locally play fine, as do sound files sent E-Mail, but the Sound is missing from You Tube Videos and similar sites. The Videos fine so it looks like he’s back to silent movies. :D

1139352 2010-09-30 11:35:00 Try the K-Lite codec pack. It seems to be good at sorting out issues.
The myriad of audio visual codecs is a nightmare. Makes me almost wish I didn't use any AV media.
