1138894 2010-09-22 03:07:00 I have an Acer Aspire One netbook with an 8GB solid state drive, no hard disk. I got it for email and web browsing when travelling. However the tiny drive is filling up fast. As far as I can tell the culprits are Windows updates and Macafee Antivirus definition updates. Is there any way of minimising this buildup of clutter?
Second question - it came with Works, Outlook Express and a 30 day trial of Word (which I haven't signed up for.) These are all quite big programs. Are there reliable email and writing programs that would take up less space? I've used Open Office and like it, but is it any smaller than Word? thanks, Bruce

1138895 2010-09-22 03:09:00 Get rid of Mcafee's. Or get a bigger SSD Speedy Gonzales (78)
1138896 2010-09-22 03:21:00 Well try abiword ( May also use a online email service like Gmail, which I also use for storage of documents. Any images you could save online, e.g. Flickr, Picassa, and Microsoft's Skydrive (http://windowslive.com/online/skydrive" target="_blank">www.abisource.com/) to replace word. 1)Disable updates
2)Uninstall trials, Works etc, get small software
3)Buy a bigger drive and clone this one over to it, which really is a better solution, because even with 1 & 2 it's still tiny

1138898 2010-09-22 03:58:00 A bigger drive is uneconomic in this machine.
Uninstall Microsoft Office and uninstall McAfee, then use Revouninstaller to take it all away as windows system restore might just have kept it all! The Microsoft Virus and Malware freebie uses smaller amounts of SSD and will do the job. Microsoft Works can be uninstalled too if you go to Open Office Org. You do not have to install all the Open Office programs, just the ones you might need like Calc for spreadsheets and Word.

1138899 2010-09-22 04:02:00 I have an Asus Eee701 which has a 4gig drive. This is ample for XP and basic programs, and I still have 775mb free. Get rid of the demo/trial programs and mcAfee. Turn off System Restore & Auto Updates *(does not effect MSS)

1. Install *Microsoft Security & use the Windows fire wall.
2. Firefox Web Browser.
3. Thunderbird for Email.
4. Open Office, you can install the complete suite, or just the programs you
want.
5. Foxit PDF reader.
6. Crap Cleaner - gets rid off unused files and registry entries.

For storage I have a 7gig SD card in its slot as a second drive, comes up as D. It has been there for over a year without any problems I don't keep any important files on it.

Fire-Fox, Fox-it, Thunderbird, and Crap cleaner will run on the SD card if you wish.

1138900 2010-09-22 04:47:00 Just get a normal 2.5" in HD. Should fit in there fine. www.computerlounge.co.nz Netsukeninja (13296)
1138901 2010-09-22 05:27:00 Well... If you don't mind using linux... Maybe you might want to consider that. It will be hard to live with windows if you only have 8gb. Cato (6936)
1138902 2010-09-22 05:33:00 If the OS is XP and you are not going to want to uninstall any of your windows updates then you can do the following . These can build up considerably over time .

Delete contents of c:\windows\$hf_mig$\ .
Delete all c:\windows\$ntuninstall*\ folders .
Delete all c:\windows\kb* . log files .
Delete contents of c:\windows\servicepackfiles\ .
Delete contents of c:\windows\softwaredistribution\download\ .

Also, keep your internet browser caches small - 50MB is plenty .

Only do this if you never plan to download any further updates to windows . hf_mig contains records of the latest versions of files . If you delete them, windows may overwrite newer versions of files with older ones .

Same with servicepackfiles; on a normal comp, if this is deleted, windows will as you for the windows CD which will contain older versions of files . If servicepackfiles exists, it will look in there instead .
