1138799 2010-09-21 12:01:00 My friend has just bought a new laptop with Win7 (from a v old machine with XP), and reckons her dial-up connection speed is lower now than it was before.

The guy who supplied the machine said:

Yes dial up will be much slower than it was, the operating system and anti virus system is designed to be on a fast network connection, every time you connect the system is looking for updates and solutions to any issues which will happen in the background.
That didn't ring quite true to me. I can understand that this might be why it is slower when first connected, but once things have settled down I can't see it. Or am I missing something?

BTW she is expecting to get broadband tomorrow (hooray!)

1138800 2010-09-21 12:10:00 Dialup is so slow that by the time it's finished downloading the first lot of updates, there are probably more sitting there waiting. Depending on how up-to-date the machine was when she bought it, it may even still be downloading the first lot of updates!

I suspect that her old machine wasn't set up with software that requires the same level of updating as her new system. What the guy said to her does seem pretty reasonable.

Edit: The theoretical maximum transfer rate for a 56k dialup modem is 24.61MiB per hour (3600 * 56 / 8 / 1024) - in reality it will usually be significantly slower.

Yes.
Her modem isn't truely compatible with Win7. That's why. If she looks at the connection speed I bet it's connecting at 31.2k instead of 50ish.

I had lots of dialup customers down South and it was a problem finding a compatible modem. But you say she's getting broadband so she need not bother changing the modem then...........

1138803 2010-09-21 21:03:00 When you buy a New laptop,as its been mentioned, there will be a load of updates.

Going from memory, the last dozen Window 7 installs I have done there is on average 30MB + of windows updates, then of course if it has Office there will be a HUGE amount as well.

If it has Office 2007 trials (some still do) then expect at least 200+MB of updates alone.

Sometimes when going to peoples houses, its and they are on dial up, its actually quicker for me to take their PC/Laptop back to my workshop, connect it to my LAN and download, then return it later that day.
