If a child commits a crime, the parent can be ordered to do a parenting course.

Is this legal? If a child robs a bank why should the parent be ordered to do a parenting course?

I wonder how long the course is and the times because parents may have to give up work. Wonder what crimes a child has to commit so the parent will have to do a course. Wonder what the penalty is if a parent says they don't want to do it.

Good on Labour, Greens, Progressives, Maori Party for opposing it. I am going to email ALL national MP's now and tell them to not pass the bill. Who's with me?

861694 2010-02-26 06:57:00 Parents are responsible for their children, maybe that's why? I'm surprised you think its wrong to take a parent to parental courses because there kids are out of control.

I mean ya know parents aren't there to just watch their children grow up, they actually have to be apart of it otherwise they learn nothing.

But the State tells the Parents how to bring up their children in so far as you can't smack them any more can you?

I know that's tongue in cheek and I too would like the see more parents held at least partially responsible for the actions of their offspring.

And lance4k it's time you actually learned to read. You assume that the parents have done nothing wrong.

Yes, I agree with you that parents should be responsible for their children but I'm sure you can still remember the 'anti-smacking' law. If parents can't discipline their own children how do you expect the parents to be responsible for their children? Children nowadays are taught in schools to report to the police if their parents 'abuse' them. What the f*&&^%* hell is this all about? Send all the politicians to jail, instead! They should take all the responsibilities. The Politicians are to be blamed

861698 2010-02-26 21:36:00 Its the slack justice system we have. If a kid does a crime, they should do the time. End of story. But this isnt going to happen. They know theyre too young to be convicted for most crimes. So, what the hell. They do it.

The parents should pay. For not looking after them. Parents get charged, if they dont supervise children under a certain age. And parents can be made to pay if the kid does damage to someone else's property. So, why shouldnt they get charged / prosecuted if their kids, break the law. If they cant handle the kids, dont have any !

861700 2010-02-26 23:10:00 My father was responsible for my behaviour until I was 21.

He could have been sentenced to serve time for any crime I commited and the local policeman had no hesitation in reminding parents of their responsibility and hence they took great care in knowing where you were and what you were up to.

I have no doubt, that under today’s law I would have spent a large portion of my life behind bars. ;)

We have absolutely nothing to thank the bleeding heart do-gooders for.
