2010-02-24 06:14:00 | They had hoodies on say no more. These are despicable people doing despicable crimes who are just starting off their criminal careers. When caught they couldn't give a ****. They will probably be from some stellar suburb like otara. Do agree with backup sigh I have copies of all our photies on dvds in the shed in case my house burns down.

2010-02-24 06:17:00 | Seems they took all the electronics so probably would have taken a backup drive if there had been one too | gary67 (56) | |
2010-02-24 06:19:00 | this is quite despicable, with a family that's already gone through so much, Hope the cops catch them so they can say hi to 'bubba'. | WestMclaren2004 (7303) | |
2010-02-24 06:31:00 | Tragic turn of events for sure esp for the family. Having backups in the exact same place as the originals is not that bright. Seen it many times, people who do back up data, have the back up drive sitting right next, or connected to the PC - BAD move. Bit like people having a separate drive in the PC containing them - why bother, if the PC fries, or gets stolen so does the backup. ANY back up should be kept in a different location. If the house had burnt down the back ups would have gone with it, or as in this case, stolen, if the backup drive media was kept say outside in a garage or shed, its a lot safer. Hope they get their Pictures back - Lucky if they do.

2010-02-24 07:08:00 | I've seen a lot of people use the second partition on acer computers as a "backup". There is no good reason for acer to split the drives like that - the only people I see who use the second partition are the ones who think it is a backup drive | Greven (91) | |
2010-02-24 20:29:00 | All my pictures, music, DVD rips, important info etc is backed up onto a 1TB external drive on the first of every month using Synctoy and hidden very cunningly in the shed . . . . . . Would doubt a thief would ever find it . I also see people either not backing up at all, or backing up to the same drive . Have resorted to scare tactics in the past to get friends to buy an external backup; i . e . give their computer a clean, steal all their pics etc and tell them they've been wiped by the virus I managed to remove . . . . . Watch them freak out for a few days, and them give them back to them . Seems to work ok . . . . . . :D

2010-02-24 22:37:00 | On a broader topic. Now with digital technology more information are created. People just don't backup stuff. That hasn't changed. As long as we can live our lives, do our jobs, go on holiday then anything else is mute. In the olden days, we had film negatives, we just dumped them into shoe boxes or that bedroom drawer with maybe lipstick and crayons. Maybe loose negatives were just thrown into the drawer. These days we have digital files located on one HDD, maybe many are kept on the same memory card taken year(s) ago. And this I mean, wedding photo's et al .. Backup is a huge chore by itself. In terms of digital photography, photo editing is one of the most hated tasks. All they want to do is take the camera or memory card to photo kiosk and get prints there and have it right on the spot or at the same time burn a CD. Some of them are known to just email full size images right out of camera .. Some people just don't place importance on them. I know IT savvy people as well and they are just not into film. I mean they might be their childhood photographs, he wanted to scan the negs to say screen size and then throw the prints and the negs away ... In the past we never backed up a record or cassette tape .... If our birth certificates or passports got stolen we just apply for another. How many of us have a safe storage box that we subscribe to ... Many of us have one location - our home so where do we store our backups? They probably won't pay for subscribing boxes nor pay or spend the time putting it online ...
