861702 2010-02-26 23:58:00 Some parents can be already be punished (i.e. previous convictions and penalties) before their kids commit a crime; Unfortunately I have seen this in dysfunctional/marginal families... kahawai chaser (3545)

861705 2010-02-27 00:42:00 I think that parents should be punished on a case by case basis. For example, if a parent lets there 10yr old out in the middle of the night and they wreck havoc then the parents should be partially to blame.

But if the child sneaks out and the parent has punished them in every way legally possible (Can't use violence anymore) then I believe the parents should be in the wrong and should be given help and advice on how to deal with their problematic child.

861706 2010-02-27 00:55:00 Back in the day it was somewhat easier for Parents to actually parent.

My Dad went to work and Mum stayed home. My Dad was able to earn the princely sum of 20 pounds per week as a qualified fitter and turner which was enough to raise and look after our family of five. We didn't have playstations or computers or even TV but we got three meals per day and the roof over the head.

If you wanted something like a bike you saved up and when you had the money you got one. As a kid I worked for my pocket money by doing chores etc.

At school the guys learned woodwork and the gals learned to cook. That's just the way it was and we made our own fun and entertainment. I might add that Mum taught me how to cook as well which came in good stead when I joined the Scouting movement and used to go bush for six weeks over the Xmas holidays.

I could have very easily got in with "the wrong crowd" but never did as my parents were there and they insisted on knowing where I was at any given time. And if I said I was at one place and they found out I wasn't then there were very painful consequences.

Not that I was perfect but I never did drugs, thieving and stuff like that. I do admit to grabbing the odd bit of fruit from another persons tree when I should not have and a few other things that hardly put me in the criminal class.

how would a parenting course help parents to stop their child sneaking out of the house? to stop someone sneaking out wouldn't the parents need to have the keys for the door locks and have locks on the windows so the child can't get out? but then you can't imprison a child can you?, that's illegal. So again, parenting course for this, why?
