The thing is, that all NZers should have access to those programs, not just those that pay to get pay TV, which in NZ is a monopoly and expensive. The funny thing is, that quote " Ellis said the move to include pay TV in the company’s portfolio of platforms was a logical extension of TVNZ’s strategy "Inspiring New Zealanders on Every Screen", which began in 2006." How does putting it on Sky TV make it possible to view NZ content on 'EVERY' screen, for those that can't afford to get sky. The head of TVNZ must think that everyone has sky. It also undermines the worth of freeview. |

Instead they go and make it restricted to their competitor's expensive pay television. The head of TVNZ must think that everyone has sky. For people on $100k per year, everyone does. Sky TV is the largest television platform in New Zealand and it was implied Sky would refuse to take the channel unless it was exclusive to Sky TV. Probably the majority of the people who supposedly have a Freeview enabled television would just have their TV plugged into a Sky box via composite cables and never flip over to watching terrestrial broadcasts. TVNZ couldn't afford to broadcast a new channel in analogue and broadcasting on Freeview would have even less audience. They'd figure Sky would give them higher ratings and reach the wealthier half of the population who the adverts they carry are aimed at. |
