863431 2010-03-03 06:30:00 For those of you who think that the driving age should be 18 or even 20, think about this: who teaches you to drive? and will you still be living with them when you are 18 or 20? If you go straight from school into a job, how do you get to work? Many jobs require a driver's license.

It's called taking the bus. We do have a public transportation system don't we?

Yes, but not every city has a reliable one ;)

Depending on where you live.

As I said, if you are rural you should be excused. All cities and towns should have public transport infrastructure.

863436 2010-03-03 06:44:00 Cities are irrelevant. They are so unpleasant that the kids should be penned up and not allowed out in them even as pedestrians. R2x1 (4628)
863437 2010-03-03 06:45:00 I was driving 4200cc Turbo when between 15 and 19. That's just dumb to give people restrictions, since a lot of parents etc have V8 etc.You can always (easily) go 180+ even in a 1300cc car. Won't stop anything.
How many parents would be stupid enough to let their 15yr old drive their V8? Not the mention the insurance bills!

That makes it worse, a majority of people on learners licenses breach conditions anyway. IMO restricted and full license tests have to be longer and more through.

Yep increasing the punishment would be a good deterrent.

And there should be NO tolerance for people with learners/restricted licenses. If you breach conditions, they take your license away or breach it three times, and your car gets crushed and a massive fine.
Definitely.

No point in that. But they should have to take one after losing license etc. Do they do this? Instead of the 28 day/ 6 months suspensions or whatever it is that they have.
If they don't then they definitely should. Also 10yrs would be better. I know alot of middle ages people who manage to forget alot of the road rules. Basically only a 20-30min refresher course.

Everyone can pass a theory test. I could do one tomorrow and still pass, it's just basic common sense, something people usually have when they take tests, but generally lack.

Not the common sense questions. More of the specialist questions like tyre tread, how far can this hang over the side or the front. Thrown in with a few common sense questions.

863438 2010-03-03 06:55:00 i think the rural thing is over played. look at most driving teenagers do in rural areas. its rarely farm orientated, mostly school and sports which mum/dad have been taking them for the last 5-10 years anyway and also the events are often out of town so even the non-rural kids have to get driven to anyway.

the "who teachs them to drive" is a good point. but i don't think thats a big obstacle. the bigger problem is that they are being taught by poor drivers in the first place. so it may be better that they are away from home and resort to professional lessons.

the first job, yes/no. for me i cycled into town even tho had a license (and drove work vehicles) in winter it was just a matter of organizing a lift in. the same with some family members at the moment. its just a matter of them getting of their lazy buts and organizing their ride in and back.

It was a diesel. But if you as a parent had a V8, why wouldn't you let your kid drive it? Would you go out and buy them another car?
As long as they kid is supervised, and is not going to get silly. You don't need a V8 to kill yourself, anything will do just fine.
Most boy racer cars aren't even as fast as your grandmother's car. It's how they drive it. Give them a 1300cc and they will still get to whatever speed they like.

It will never get to specialist questions. But what I would say is, get everyone to sit their restricted and full license on a manual regardless what they want to drive.
If you learn to drive on a manual, and this is solely my opinion, you get a better understanding of the dynamics of driving.

I am sure schools (or whoever) provide free driving lessons. There are always ads in papers for free licensing and lessons.
