863358 2010-03-03 07:30:00 Were people informed properly?
Don't know

Do you think NZ is in any danger of future tsunamis?
Yes

Did you go down to the waterfront to watch the tsunami?
No

How did you hear about the tsunami warning?
Police coming into the campsite at McKee domain Ruby Bay where we were camping and turfing us all out at 8am (it's on the waterfront about 1m above high tide level)

863359 2010-03-03 07:35:00 7.15am to 10am I followed web sites and excellent Radio NZ, but was horrified to see the variations they showed between warning times for various NZ towns. TV and Radio initially repeated the long list of various times, but they were unable to keep up when Civil Defence issued a revised lists. The worst was Auckland Civil Defence EMERGENCY STATUS which did not update details from Wellington - just left original times in place. To make it worse they had a live date/clock at the top of their warning list - which made it look like they had updated very recently.
Fullers Ferries - notice timed at 7.30am saying ferries all running and we'll continue to update. By 9am we had lists (Radio NZ, Civil Defence) of expected tsunami hits but Fullers still hadn't updated - not even to say 'we're still running ferries.'
TV3 web site front page item was a 7.41am news report. It was still showing as front page item at 9.30am even though there were several more recent news items if you clicked the side bars. That item said tsunami "is expected to reach Chathams by 7am" - so by 9.30 they hadn't amended that.
So your homework could mention that while Civil Defence in Wellington seemed to have a grip on the situation the various means of delivering details to the general public were sometimes woefully inadequate.

863363 2010-03-08 08:32:00 were people informed properly?
yes, but many did the wrong thing, EG going to the beach.

do you think NZ is in any danger of future tsunamis?
yes, 90% of NZ lives with 50KM of the sea.
big earthquakes happen every month somewhere.
it's not hard to work out...

863364 2010-03-08 08:40:00 I don't believe in homework, never have, never will. Knowledge is gained by many, many, other methods.

LL

I agree 100%
I find that experience and reading gives me more knowledge than homework ever did.

sometimes it's reading about it then trying it.
sometimes it's just reading about it.
and sometimes it's trying it, putting out the fire , then reading about it in the newspaper :-)

but all of the above result in experience, knowledge, and sometimes powder burns :-)
