1140116 2010-09-28 05:34:00 Hi

I am considering purchasing a netbook to replace my aging IBM T22 (Intel 900MHz with 384M RAM). On my personal PCs I choose not to be a MS Windows user - but as you are probably aware at the moment it seems to be impossible to purchase a laptop without Windows pre-installed.

You could say "Just get over it and buy one". True - but to me it is not just the money involved. I fail to see why I am forced to line the pockets of Microsoft for some software that I do not want.

So my point - does anyone know of a source of netbooks without MSWindows pre-installed. I am quite keen on the Lenovo S12 but might be too expensive??

Thanks
John

I know what you mean. Dell did have an option - but I'm not that partial to Dells anyway. They have an enterprise netbook which you can get with Ubuntu (www1.ap.dell.com)

While I can understand your ideals - I'd recommend actually shopping for the right hardware instead. I ended up buying an ASUS 1005PE - nixed Win7 and installed Debian Sid. It's great. The battery life is amazing. So good in fact that I just ordered a 1015PED from the US (should be here later this week).

If you want I can let you know how it goes once it arrives.

Not at $1,749! Probably not anyway since I am quite happy using Linux (currently Ubuntu).

How are people finding these netbooks ? - have heard some bad things about reliability and build quality. That is why I was thinking Lenovo - especially since it runs in 1080x800 pixels.

1140123 2010-09-29 00:12:00 I have been a long time Lenovo (IBM) Thinkpad user. I like them but now that I have a PC (unlike the past) I find my X series larger than I want. I do wish I had got a Netbook or a iPad instead. Nomad (952)

The Eee PCs? Build quality seems traditional Asus - brilliant. I've got one at home and we have 4 at work (a 1001P, 2 1005P, a 1008P and 1201N), the oldest is about 14 months, zero issues with any. Battery life is good, durability seems good, performance is good (for their spec). Only thing is that they could use slightly higher res screens, the 10.1" ones are 1024x600 where the 1201 is a much more enjoyable 1366x768 - but its the 12" LCD not 10", so is physically larger and heavier - I'd estimate about 1.5kg, compared with ~1kg for the smaller ones.

I sooo want an EeeBoard (www.asus.com) (or are they boringly calling it an EeeKeyboard?) when they arrive here...
