1139694 2010-09-26 09:59:00 Hi All

I am currently the very unhappy owner of a linksys WAG160N, possibly the worst computer related product I have ever owned!

I am desperate to replace it!

What I am after is a wireless setup for my ADSL2. The devices typically connecting are: Main PC (wired), mine and my wifes iPhone 4's, lounge laptop, ps3 and mine and my wifes work laptops. Soon an iMac too.

I want a setup that will just work and be solid and non flakey.
I like uPNP but don't have to have it.
It must be wireless N
It must have ethernet, but doen not have to have gigabit
It must get on with the mixture of device we have
Range must be suitable for a 2 story timber house.
It doesn't have to be one device, if someone can recommend a pairing thats ok.

The products I am currently kicking around as options are:

Apple airport extreme
- Mixed reviews
- Don't know what to parter it with

There was a netcomm product but that seems to be discontinued, I have heard they make good kit, is there a model thats good?

Bottom line, I am reluctant to pay for the apple, plus modem, ideally the total would be less than $200. Recommendations please :help:

Cheers

1139695 2010-09-26 10:13:00 In my experience the Apple airport products are not too reliable.
I have a 3com router but it doesn't have 802.11n, only g, but I use a stand alone access point with 802.11n (SMC WGBR14-N) which is great, but I can't recommend SMC routers as the ones I have had have not been great overall.
The 3com is very solid, never have problems with it.

1139696 2010-09-26 11:23:00 Linksys are pretty good. What's the problem you're having with it?

I had one running 3 pcs wired and ps3 + laptop wireless with no problems.

I don't agree, I had a $300 Linksys wireless AP/router (no DSL built in) and it would crash every few days, replaced it with the equivilent SMC (about $120) and I rarely have any problems, it also has 5 Gbit ports (one for WAN) and a USB port (so it can double as a print/scan server or even a NAS box), the linksys for more than double the price had only one feature the SMC didn't have - frequent crashes.

Linksys on the whole are fairly average.

Some of the netgear stuff is fairly decent, I've heard good things about thier DSL routers...

1139698 2010-09-26 19:59:00 Funny how some will point the finger and say that XXXXX is the worst brand on the market.

I wonder how much of it relates to the individual setup of the piece of equipment in question.

I have a WAG320n wilth multiple connections and have experienced no connection/transmission issues what-so-ever.

1139699 2010-09-26 20:38:00 MMmmm... The Linksys N-range of gear is prone to crashing / overheating. Almost everything else is great IMO.

Two suggestions:
1) Linksys AM300 in half-bridge to an Airport or Airport Extreme
2) NetComm NB6Plus4Wn

I've taken my current blog site down for maintenance, but see here (Older archive):
chillingsilence.wordpress.com

Might point you in the right direction :)

Personally, based on what you're saying, I'd go for the Airport Extreme + AM300.

Welcome to PressF1!

1139700 2010-09-28 09:55:00 Firstly cheers all!

@ Deimos

What have you heard about the apple gear? I have not managed to find any bad press apart from being expensive.

What does SMC stand for? Sounds like good value!

@ SoniKalien

My Linksys drops the connects of any device every 30min to 45min, terrible, seems to be a global problem. Search for WAG160N AP Isolation and you will get hundreds of hits. Great as a wired router though......

@ Zippity

Good on ya, on paper linksys is great and gets great reviews. Unfortunately mines issues blow its otherwise excellent performance sky high!

@ Chilling_Silence

Great nic btw! Cheers for the welcome too.

I had heard about the NetComm NB6Plus4Wn and @ $140 seems great! Does it get on with apple gear? My linksys can't even filter an apple mac address.....

Do you think the AM300 plus Airport extreme is a performance guarantee? At $400 all up (give or take) I would be hoping so.

Cheers

Um apple mac addresses are the same format as any other device.
