2010-09-25 00:28:00 | Ok, SWMBO has decided to thrash out on a new Notebook to replace her old Dell P3 WinME machine . :clap At the moment she is looking at an ASUS K52F for $2250 . Now I realise this machine is over specked for her requirements but thats not the point . My concern is that it comes with Win7 Professional 64bit OS and I wonder how she will get on running the likes of Office 2000 and the Camera and Mobile Phone software she already has? She doesnt want to be twiddling her thumbs whilst Nokia or Canon upgrade their software either . Equally, she cant justify purchasing the latest Office Suite . So, I guess the question is, what runs and what doesnt on a Win7 Prof 64 bit OS? All input appreciated . :thanks

2010-09-25 00:37:00 | For starters, Office 2000 is not officially supported on W7 . It does work to a degree, but can give problems, one problem is Outlook, that wont hold passwords . If its a new Laptop, it should have a trial version of Office 2010 installed . You "SHOULD" have the option to run office 2010 STARTER EDITION or a trail of Pro . Some manufactures are not putting in the Starter edition, which I think sucks . I ask customers if they want the Starter Edition or fuller versions, some say free, others want all the bells and whistles . The Starter edition is Free to the customer - and its a cut down version of Word & Excel, that is replacing MSWorks . As for the other software,(Nokia or Canon) it may require downloading from the manufactures site - simple as really . Just check on the site before hand, and it will give options as to whats available .

2010-09-25 02:03:00 | I have Office XP. It says Word 2002. Never had any issue using it at all on Win7 64bit. Check ph and camera to see whats available to download, and as far as camera goes, does it even matter? It should just be another external device and assigned a drive letter.

2010-09-25 05:51:00 | If the Nokia s/w is the same, mine works, I have a 1 or 2yr old phone. I got the new download. Like my Garmin GPS, they do not provide s/w downloads at all due to licensing I think, but the original CD worked in W7 x64. Maybe you just have to try it out ..... For the cam, *some* cams won't work without the software unless you get a USB memory card reader. Ie., the cam will not be recognised as a external storage device. A lot of the s/w actually work in 32bit in W7., ie., they are installed to the x86 Program Files folder afaik ...

2010-09-25 09:32:00 | And I just may be wrong, but I don't think so, there are some CPU's which do not support the use of XP mode. I'll see if I can find a list of supported CPUs. OK. I was sort of wrong. You don't have to have a CPU with hardware virtualisation. FAQ here:- www.microsoft.com

2010-09-25 09:40:00 | Doesnt matter, since there's an update that'll let you use it on non-VT cpu's support.microsoft.com Install this after installing XP mode

2010-09-26 19:59:00 | Does the laptop not come with 32bit media, you can use the same CD Key! Sorry SolMiester but I don't understand. :o This is the machine here (www.elive.co.nz). I've just noticed it doesn't seem to have any PS2 keyboard or Mouse sockets either nor bluetooth? Maybe this isn't what SWMBO wants.
