| 1140693 | 2010-09-30 08:53:00 | Hi all, Writing this on our new laptop (Toshiba L650D) since my 5 year old Dell Inspiron 6000 threw in the towel last week. It had been freezing more regularly, until finally I am unable to boot from the HDD. I have however been able to use the diagnostics mode to do a full scan on the HDD. Results were read test: Fail (about 10-20 segments uncorrectable), and also fail on the verify test. So, I guess that the hard drive is still functioning, but just has bad sectors in the boot files. Seems feasible that I would be able to get some sort of adaptor to connect it to my new laptop and using some sort of software (can Windows 7 be used?) be able to get recent (that haven't been backed up) files off. Thanks for any advice! |

| 1140694 | 2010-09-30 09:01:00 | Depending on whats actually happened to the Old Drive, you may be able to put the drive in an External case, which plugs in Via USB, then read the old drive and copy the data across. The cases are generally around $35.00. Something like This for IDE (www.ascent.co.nz) or if the drive is SATA This would do (www.ascent.co.nz) If the drive is more badly damaged, it may require recovery software. |

Also, should I be able to get Mozbackup to get my emails out of Thunderbird from the old HDD and onto my new laptop? Cheers! |
