865362 2010-03-09 06:52:00 We looked into similar ones a number of years ago, and decided it wasn't worth the cost.

I think there was one made by a company called Quantum, and another sold by a small company out of Kapiti (whose name I cannot remember).

865365 2010-03-09 07:03:00 Anybody quoting this "Today, new technology has made it possible to produce units with much greater efficiency than solar water heating in New Zealand." is a bit novel in their definition of "efficiency".
Do they not realise that sunlight falling on your property and not being harnessed cannot be returned for credit?

865366 2010-03-09 09:52:00 My sister's family have one at their née house.
It's a big cylinder that has to sit outside as it has the heat pump built in to it.
Not sure how good it is or what their power bill is like.

865367 2010-03-09 19:19:00 There's two major issues with them - the cost, which others have mentioned, is very high, so getting ROI on one would require you to stay in the house for many years. Solar heating requires the same commitment, but less-so as it's getting cheaper all the time.

Second issue is that they still require regular electrical heating to raise the water temperature to a high enough point to kill bacteria that forms in the cylinder - the heat pump isn't capable of doing this itself.

Nelson is too sunny to do anything other than solar I think Gaz!

865368 2010-03-09 19:57:00 Solar is the way to go had one installed in September.
Power bill before $220 after $110 might go up in winter we'll see.
Have a look at this package (www.novaenergy.co.nz). I don't know if they are in Nelson yet.

865369 2010-03-09 20:06:00 Just out of interest, in the case of solar power / heating, if you have surplus, are you able to back feed into the local power grid for a rebate in NZ ? PinoyKiw (9675)

I would get competative quotes, just to keep them honest, they seem to talk of lots fo freebies, somebody has to pay for.
