864966 2010-03-08 08:47:00 To find out who is at the other end of a phone number without ringing it?

Sort of like a reverse White Pages lookup. Have the number, who is calling?

864967 2010-03-08 08:50:00 It used to be the case that if you had the number, you could get the address it belonged to, but not the other way around. That was before overzealous privacy laws though! nofam (9009)
864968 2010-03-08 10:23:00 It is possible and the Police can do it but not your average law abiding citizen. Sweep (90)
864969 2010-03-08 10:26:00 If you're lucky, they might have a telecom voicemail service. Try calling 083210, and enter in their phone number as the mailbox number and it might say whose it is.

Not sure if this will still work, I know it used to.

864970 2010-03-08 10:41:00 Cheers guys - just trying to establish who called my SkypeIn number from the Waikato on a landline today while I was at work. Looks like I'll have to call them back, since they didn't leave a voicemail.... johcar (6283)
864971 2010-03-08 10:45:00 Probably some scam artist doing a survey. Sweep (90)

Yeah it's possible, if you have a friend working for Telecom.

864974 2010-03-08 21:59:00 Turns out it was a wrong number - working from home today and got another call. Someone looking for "Richard" at Saatchi...

Mystery solved... :)

864975 2010-03-08 22:12:00 Just ask them to hold on while you check. Have another quick speech every 6 minutes where you explain their call is important to you.

It's more satisfying to do it to land agents though, especially when there are cellphones at both ends.
