1140807 2010-10-02 21:02:00 Personally I dont think the HDD is the start of the Problem - its the end result.

Looking back at post #11, part quoted - (in bold):
I had the same problem the first time I built it,so I used my room mate's old hard drive and I didn't tell him, but I don't know why, but one day I turned it on and there was no POST, so I got it replaced for the first time, so I took it out and put it back to his pc, and the whole bundle replaced, when I got everything back, I got the same problem, got it replaced, and here I am right now! If i read that post correctly, thats 3 HDD's in a short time that have failed.

If that is correct, then you either have been really unlucky, OR there is something else causing the HDD's to fail & causing the problem.

1140808 2010-10-02 21:21:00 It's new. I have built it in the summer.

By the way, I don't think it has anything to do with a PSU, because the first time it broke, I was using my old PSU, but now I got new one.

EDIT:::
I am going to sleep in a bit, should I leave the memtest running all night... or should I wait till it is finished, turn the pc off and go to sleep?

Are all the parts from the same seller? I take it back to them.
Failing that I would probably replace the motherboard and the PSU.
To me there is no point in testing it. I mean you cannot sent up a 3 or 6 month simulation could you and then be prepared to possibly replace any other HDD down the road ...

I would also try a different seller.

Then there's the 20,000+ errors he got on Memtest apparently.

He said he got a new PSU but was it brand new or just new as in "never used in that PC before" ?

Perhaps both PSUs are crap, and are destroying hardware.

As you mentioned -- could be any one of the reasons you pointed out.

Personally I would be looking at the Motherboard or PSU. As I mentioned before, 3 HDD's (if i got the number right) is either damn unlucky or another fault someplace.

So far we can determine, the memory is throwing up errors and HDD's are failing for some reason. Usually means either the PSU, or Motherboard, OR a combination of both.

Assuming these are still under warranty, I would be getting them replaced, or Sorted by the supplier. Make SURE you give the full history as to whats happened to the components, and when.

Simply guessing at whats wrong can be a costly exercise.

1140811 2010-10-03 16:02:00 I have bought the PSU for 80 pounds. If it is the PSU then I will get my money back and I will buy a new one.
I will try to get everything replaced once more, and I will ask them to install ubuntu before sending it to me.
I could try to test the hdd with western digital diagnostic utility, my laptop doesn't write cds.

1140814 2010-10-05 00:31:00 I'll think take it all back to the shop.
If they don't find anything out like the new HDDs hasn't fallen over yet .. I'll think about how much effort do you want to keep putting into the system? One option is to spend a bit more money and start a fresh. Only you can decide that.

I guess thou if it is all warranted for the 3 or so years, one could just make regular backups, one should anyway and just get them to replace and replace ....

1140815 2010-10-08 18:26:00 I have bought a new hard drive to test it. AND IT WORKS ! I have installed windows vista.

How come that I only get 3.25gb ram?
phq (15980)
1140816 2010-10-08 18:47:00 Because its 32 bit? If you want to use 8 GB you need 64 bit Speedy Gonzales (78)
