1140717 2010-10-01 06:25:00 +1 for Testdisk

I needed it a couple of weeks ago after a partition resize/move disaster left me with a corrupted partition table. I had been using GParted but it was my fault for not reading up about cylinder alignment and not going with GParted's default setting for my drive. It's certainly a sobering moment when you see your hard drive has no partitions on it! :(

Anyway, a run with Testdisk found the partitions and restored them perfectly (luckily the partition move I had done wasn't an overlapping move).

1140718 2010-10-01 07:02:00 Oh, the joys of GParted, so MANY fails with that, wrong drive, wrong partition, power cuts in the middle of partitioning

ahhh!

1140719 2010-10-01 07:49:00 Parted Magic is a good ISO for partitioning, recovery(testdisk) ETC. mikebartnz (21)
1140720 2010-10-01 11:55:00 ....and if testdisk can't sort things out for you, take a look at photorec - it's a signature-based recovery program bundled with testdisk, and it should be able to get most if not all of your files back, provided you haven't overwritten them. Erayd (23)
1140721 2010-10-02 00:17:00 ...that's what happens when you play with fire and make a Hackintosh ;)

Worked great for me, but then I was sensible and used a completely separate hard drive, and unplugged the others.

Even if the drive had gone up in flames I wouldn't have had any problems (except loss of a drive and a horrible smell)

1140722 2010-10-02 00:46:00 I thought I was safe, worked fine 3x over on my external, now I just wanted to be able to use on the move. didn't work out, has now though. waiting for some bad weather. this sun is too good to waste mucking with the bad apple The Error Guy (14052)
1140723 2010-10-03 10:21:00 Mate I haven't seen that before!

Can it see other partitions properly? If yes by elimination what partition is it not picking up properly?

Perhaps look for a partition management tool to fix this issue (after rescuing the partitions you can see). There are plenty of free bootable linux based tools..... hang on you are working in an enclosure aren't you.... There must be some free windows based ones too.

Not sure how it deals with apple.

1140724 2010-10-03 18:55:00 Thanks for the tip petja, its all ready fixed. after recovering as much as I could (in case I screwed up with testdisk) I managed to rewrite the partition table and MBR without loosing anything. a quick auto fix from the win7 boot disk and I was fine (aside from my bootloaders being screwed aesthetically) The Error Guy (14052)
1140725 2010-10-04 08:11:00 Good to hear its all sorted, glad I could be of service.

Beware the dual boot in future! If you run windows 7 get an external hdd and set up an auto backup so easy, so efficient, haven't had to call on it but I know I am safe.

Cheers
