News on NZ and Australian TV is by and large infotainment - one cannot help but get the belief that NZ TV Management and programme controllers have a fairly low opinion of the intellect of their viewers. It is just the same in Australia with the commercial stations that see their target audience as brain dead. Simillarly with weather forecasts - remember when TV 3 had an experienced, respected Meteorologist as their weather presenter, and they dumped him for a bimbo. When I was teaching in the UK, the lesson presentation philosophy was to break a lecture into 10-11 minute bites, as this was about the attention span of the average young adult and late teen - Why? - simple - it was the interval between commercials on ITV. |
