1140934 2010-10-02 21:01:00 Some AVs will throw false positives on programs which are compressed with an executable packer if it's one that's commonly used in viruses.

Joke programs are also usually detected such as those which randomly eject your CD drive etc. (although some AVs have the option to turn off detection of these)

Serial number generators and other piracy-related programs are also often detected as viruses or rather "hacktools" because of their illegal nature. Of course a fair few of them do contain real viruses.

1140935 2010-10-02 21:15:00 While I have not looked at each and every infection, mostly they are real (looked up their names on google or Via antivirus companies descriptions,if Ididn't already know what they were) Keep in mind these are results from real users, not just controlled Lab tests. Most were in Temp files, or in a location they shouldn't have been.

I would rather have an AV that detected something as a bug, even if it wasn't than let it through when it is a real infection.

Then theres the Latest AVG --- Known viruses on a drive, and 3 times it killed the AVG while scanning -- It killed it, because when it was scanning it suddenly stopped, when trying to reopen a error message would pop up saying it was damaged and repair or reinstall.

Heres a classic Failure on AVG , got a persons laptop & their backup drive with LOTS of data, Nothing will open on the Backup drive - AVG, which they have on the laptop cant even see it, every thing on the backup drive has shortcut icons, and lots of files on the Laptop wont open either and they all point to Tiuop.scr (www.prevx.com) Its the description, not the infection :)

heres what I mean (www.imagef1.net.nz) - the Backup Drive is E

So many people think a screensaver is safe whereas it is a program with a different extension.

1140940 2010-10-03 00:23:00 Not to mention all those "Free screensaver" advertisements which give you an adware bundle. Agent_24 (57)
1140941 2010-10-03 05:26:00 MSE gets the thumbs up, but not from me, I just found 7 infections it ignored but which P C Tools Registry Manager picked up. PENTIUM (426)

1140943 2010-10-03 05:53:00 MSSE is not a dedicated malware program, No Antivirus is.

You NEED at least one if not two Antispyware programs as well as an antivirus.

NO internet security package in the world will detect everything. Thats why lots of people get infections with these so called " One program does it all " -- It doesn't.

Edited: you do of course know that PC Tools / Spyware Doctor is Now Owned by NORTON (www.pctools.com) :groan: Press Release (www.symantec.com)
