865371 2010-03-09 20:27:00 There's two major issues with them - the cost, which others have mentioned, is very high, so getting ROI on one would require you to stay in the house for many years. Solar heating requires the same commitment, but less-so as it's getting cheaper all the time.

Second issue is that they still require regular electrical heating to raise the water temperature to a high enough point to kill bacteria that forms in the cylinder - the heat pump isn't capable of doing this itself.

Nelson is too sunny to do anything other than solar I think Gaz!

We are in a house that had a Tasman Energy "Quantum" system heat pump system installed (heat exchanger via roof panels) around 14 years ago,it hasn't missed a beat, heats to 55c and does NOT have an additional element. 230 sq m house power bill average includes heated ensuite floor $130 per mth for everything.

Yes if building again would possibly use a solar system here in Nelson Average sun hours 6.5 per day:banana
