| 864656 | 2010-03-07 05:33:00 | 6:15pm Sunday Just watched TV One News. They featured a clip on unemployment, the usual nonsensical talking heads, and the minister of whatever she's the minister of. Then because, they remember that theirs is not a radio medium, but is here to bring us captivating, newsworthy images, they then show footage of a couple of young guys lounging, in jeans (as you do), and - smoking cigarettes. The last footage doesn't show anything above chest height (like faces), probably to satisfy some obscure PC privacy requirement. The state broadcaster needs to be answering some serious questions. In general, the standard of reporting, and why we are shown so many times, library footage, but specifically: 1) What has anyone smoking cigarettes have to do with the unemployment issue? 2) Isn't showing those images making uncalled-for editorial - and self-serving comment? In the interests of objective, unbiased, and accurate reporting this is something we can do without :angry :angry |

| 864659 | 2010-03-07 06:16:00 | unemployment young guys lounging, in jeans and - smoking cigarettes. Young guys in jeans lounging about, smoking = unemployed. Of course. Fits in as well as the usual generalisations about the unemployed. |

As I said once before, by the time it gets to our screens, the weather forecast at 6:50pm (which purports in the words of one bimbo, to tell us exactly where the rain is going to fall), is already almost 10 hours old. |

| 864663 | 2010-03-07 08:03:00 | That's interesting. How do you know that? The forecast charts issued by NZ Met all have the time of preparation and what data they are based on. The next step is for the prepared forecast to be signed off, then it has to be published. So data gathered at 9:00am goes in the machine, and is ready to come out the other end at 3:00pm. Then the TV people have to write their script and have any spontaneous, light-hearted, hilarious asides prepared and signed off, and the graphics prepared. The presenter has to then rehearse the lines, and practice where to point to on what to them is a blank wall. So there you are. :) |
