866979 2010-03-15 02:23:00 I am for it provided it works and it will make travelling to Oz alot more easier than it already is.

I beleive that the NZ and Australian Govts are or have been in talks in regards to easier travel between NZ and Australia, eg, no passports, express passport control, etc.

866980 2010-03-15 02:28:00 I completely disagree with that statement. My :2cents:

I still would like to travel to oz easier, and is why i think it is a good idea, but there is probably no reason a deal couldnt be done between us so that could happen anyway with out becoming one big donkey

I think easier traveling to Aus is a piss poor reason for making us all Australians lol. Maybe visit the UK this year, its the cheapest its been in decades, maybe look at Aus next year for a holiday :)

866981 2010-03-15 03:46:00 I like the aussie gun laws where you can wax someone in self defence no problemo. Here the police charge you for shooting in self defence and you lose your gun licence then have no protection at all.
Also the shooters party has some influence in government.
I am warming to the idea of union especially with their firearm rules.

866982 2010-03-15 05:10:00 Dont think it is as simple as that, Perfect

There is one other person in this room and I want to get rid of him.
Not that I am in danger myself but I shoot him

Australian cops come knocking on the door after a gun shot was reported.
It was self defense officer, I reply

Oh, thats OK Sir , sorry to disturb you,we wont bother you again

866984 2010-03-15 07:52:00 I am a Kiwi who has lived in Australia for a number of years, and personally believe it would be a great opportunity for New Zealand to align itself with a strong economy - the New Zealnd economy has never been and is never likely to be an econmic powerhouse.
Our primary products, which NZ does better than anyone else, are exported into protected markets. NZ does not have the population base to run sufficiently viable manufacturing industries to enjoy good export markets, and the country needs to export to pay for all the goods it needs to import, and for as long as I can remember, NZ has had a balance of payments problem.

Todays exchange rate $A1.00 equals $NZ1.30, and that is before the banks take their cut from any transaction. Usually about 2.5%.

Union with Australia would go a long way to solving these endemic problems, however, why would Australia want to take on the liability of supporting a poor relation - would you if you could avoid it.

Another problem that NZ has to a greater degree than Australia, is the attitude to social welfare and government handouts -
They are meant to be a safety net - not a feather bed.
In NZ's case too few workers carrying too many beneficiaries.

It used to be like that until NZ let every immigrant who asked into the country who promptly moved to Ozz. hence now you need passports or visas.

Actually, I think you will find it had nothing to do with immigration and a lot to do with Mr Asia in the 1980's that made the Australian government tighten up the rules for Kiwis travelling across the ditch...

lol lets get a reality grip, Australia is only 21 million people and is not a big international economy, its a "bigger" economy but not a "big" economy. NZ economy never has to be a big powerhouse, but it does have to do things better.

Australia has benefited substantially from the NZ economy, its a symbiote relationship. Aussie banks have done very nicely here which is one of NZ's big problems. Kiwi's are always at the top or near the top of visitors to Australia pumping billions back the other way,
